Is a sixth installment of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN on its way? Possibly, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that Johnny Depp could potentially return as Captain Jack Sparrow.

“If he likes the way the part’s written, I think he would do it. It’s all about what’s on the page, as we all know…,” Bruckheimer revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “We are still working on a screenplay. We want to make it. We just got to get the right screenplay. We haven’t quite gotten there yet, but we’re close.”

In a previous interview with the outlet, the producer called the movie “reboot” and said if it were up to him, he would have Depp return.

“I love him. He’s a good friend. He’s an amazing artist, and he’s a unique look,” Bruckheimer said. “He created Captain Jack. That was not on the page; that was him doing a little Pepé Le Pew and Keith Richards. That was his interpretation of Jack Sparrow.”

But Depp’s return all depends on how the script turns out.

Movieguide® praised the most recent PIRATES installment, 2017’s PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES, for its “Strong Christian, moral worldview.” Part of the review reads:

Despite its scary villains, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES is an exciting, funny and redemptive fantasy adventure. It has lots of heart, especially during its wonderful climax. The movie is superbly structured and tightly directed. Best of all, it has a strong Christian, moral worldview with a positive pro-family theme about fathers and children. DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES is a satisfying fantasy adventure, but caution is advised for the scary villains, intense violence, some off-color jokes, the piracy theme, and some drunkenness.

A sixth installment in the $4.5 billion franchise has been teased for years. According to ScreenRant, a reboot with an all-new cast, as well as a Margot Robbie-led spinoff, have also been in talks.

But, based on Bruckheimer’s recent comments, the outlet is hopeful the sixth movie will make it to the big screen, adding that they come “shortly after Orlando Bloom admitted there have been talks of the original PIRATES cast returning.”

“Well, I don’t know, I can’t say anything at the moment because I really don’t know, but there’s definitely availability,” Bloom, who played Will Turner in the franchise, said earlier this summer. “I think they’re trying to work out what it would all look like, I personally think it’d be great to get the band back together. That would be great, but there are always different ideas, and so we’ll see where it lands.”

For now, though, PIRATES fans will have to wait to see if Bruckheimer can produce a script that will entice Depp back to the swashbuckling franchise.
