The cast bringing to life Netflix’s LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE adaptation opened up about the heart behind the classic story and what drew them to the project.
“I think there’s a whole generation of people who haven’t been exposed to these books, and even the show, and I think it’s a really awesome family story and kind of shows what it was like back then,” actress Skywalker Hughes, who plays Mary Ingalls, told Movieguide® of why the Ingalls family’s story continues to resonate.
Luke Bracey, who portrays Charles Ingalls, pointed to the “real timelessness” of the family and their story.
“…what the Ingalls family goes through and the community they’re a part of is the same thing that everyone goes through in their life all the time,” he said. “I don’t think there’s a time period that this exists in, because I think the themes and the experiences are what everyone around the world goes through all the time.”
He added, “I think…that’s the reason that it’s a beloved show across all the generations throughout all different countries throughout the world…the situations that the Ingalls find themselves in emotionally…the characters they’re trying to be, the people are trying to be, the family they’re trying to be, the community they’re trying to make — so maybe that’s why people are always connecting with it.”

For Laura Ingalls actress Alice Halsey, the show reminded her of what keeps a family together through hard times.
“I think that all they have is each other, like with Mary and Laura, there aren’t a lot of other kids on the prairie, so they have to have each other’s backs,” she explained. “Like despite the petty little conflicts, they always make up because they have to. They don’t really have anybody else, so they have to work together if they want to succeed and survive out in the prairie.”
The chance to play an iconic character who she shares so many similarities with drew Hughes to the role of Mary.
“I grew up on a farm — middle of nowhere, we didn’t have Wi-Fi, had three shows to watch… o I was big into books as a kid, especially Little House on the Prairie, and I think it’s so cool to see a family that works so hard and does so much, but it’s always together and it’s so rooted in love and just togetherness,” she said, later adding that the “sisterhood connection” in the show “was really cool.”
Halsey chimed in, “I think that it shows how a community can be made, regardless of whatever, really, and the of the situations that they’re in. I think that it’s a story about hope and growth and family and connection, and I think that we all just want to show that to people.”
LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE premieres on Netflix on July 9.
“I always like to say that this show is a love story about a family,” said showrunner and executive producer Rebecca Sonnenshine. “They’re a family you want to be with, you want to know, you want to spend time with. That’s really at the core of what Little House on the Prairie is about: a family that is there for each other, tells stories to each other, tells stories about themselves.”
With themes of family and friendship, LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE is sure to reach a whole new generation.
