For Sadie Robertson Huff, relying on scripture helped her overcome an eating disorder.

“I remember that process for me when I was going through an eating disorder when I was a teenager, and it was a transformation of the mind,” she said during an episode of her “WHOA That’s Good” podcast. “It started with not conforming to the patterns of the world. That was very helpful for me.”

She counseled listeners to “know God, be in His presence, and then when you begin to know God, the scripture will mean a lot more…it’s not just putting a bandaid…it’s really like heart surgery.”

Huff has been open about her eating disorder, telling Entertainment Tonight in a 2020 interview that it began when she competed on DANCING WITH THE STARS.

“During DANCING WITH THE STARS…[I] had this body that I never thought I’d have. I had a six-pack for two weeks, but then Thanksgiving hit and it went away. People started to comment,” she explained. “There were people in my life who were just really negative influences, that would say things that were not uplifting about the way that I looked and how I needed to maintain the body that I had. It was so wrong. I was insecure at the time, so I believed them and thought, ‘Oh, I need to push it.’”

Huff said this led to her developing “a really unhealthy view” of her body. It was her strong relationship with God that helped her overcome her eating disorder.

“I would tell myself, ‘I am so thankful that I have this. I’m so thankful that my legs actually serve the purpose that they should and that they’re able to run, that my arms are able to carry things. That my stomach one day, hopefully, will be able to carry a baby.’ Just what we’re actually designed and created for,” she shared. “It definitely made me stop thinking about myself as much. It allowed me to be able to think of others, and how I can serve them with the body I’ve been given.”

She elaborated on this in a blog post about this time in her life, writing, “The day I prayed for the Lord to enlighten my eyes to see His standard of beauty, is the day my whole life changed. But like I have said many times, in order to experience God’s beauty, you have to exhale your ugly. My heart beats behind that quote. Do these old thoughts come back from time to time? Absolutely, but it is my job to take authority over them.”

Huff’s faith helped her through this hard time in her life, and now, she is encouraging others going through the same struggle to seek out a relationship with Christ.
