NCIS Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs will not be making a return to the hit series…at least for now.

Season 23 left the team with some major upheaval. Leon Vance died suddenly last season, leaving his position as director vacant. According to ScreenRant, Gabriel LaRoche “officially returned with the intent of becoming the new director” and has “no problem tarnishing the legacy of Vance,” which he made clear to Alden Parker.

“Considering that, MCRT has to be very careful when dealing with him, as he has long proven that he would stop at nothing for political gain,” the outlet explained. “Considering Parker and Gibbs taking matters into their own hands when dealing with Wayne Rogers, it will be best if Harmon’s character continues to stay in Alaska, so as not to draw any connections between them.”

But just because Gibbs isn’t returning now doesn’t mean he won’t ever come back.

ScreenRant explained that showrunner Steven D. Binder wants to use Gibbs “effectively,” and they “decided to debut his first proper storyline in modern times in NCIS Season 23.”

“Right now, a lot of things are still uncertain in the series, but assuming that LaRoche never succeeds in his endeavor and the agency is once again led by a trustworthy character, the path would be clear for Gibbs’ Navy Yard comeback,” the outlet added.

Season 23 ended with other questions too, like the fate of Wilmer Valderrama’s character Special Agent Nick Torres.

“Look, every couple of years, you guys know NCIS has to make sure you’re watching. So we shake up the TV a little bit and we listen,” NCIS star Wilmer Valderrama told PEOPLE earlier this month. “And we listen to where you as fans want to see us do. So we always really pay attention to what our fans want to really experience on the show.”

At the end of Season 23, Torres confronted Mateo, the son of Timothy McGee, in an alleyway. In the final moments, they both reached for their guns, as Torres told Mateo, ‘Don’t do it…'” PEOPLE reported.

One gunshot was heard, but audiences don’t know who was shot because the end credits rolled.

“To be honest, I don’t think we figured that one out yet,” Valderrama said of if his character would return or not. “I don’t think we have an idea yet. I asked, ‘What do we want from it,’ but I will tell you that someone does get hit and people might not like it.”

A specific date for NCIS’ Season 24 premiere hasn’t been announced, but it will air on Tuesdays this fall along with NCIS: ORIGINS and NCIS: NEW YORK.
