Tim Allen Receives Backlash After Christmas Joke in THE SANTA CLAUSES

By Movieguide® Staff

Tim Allen recently returned to his iconic holiday role, Scott Calvin, in Disney’s new streaming series, THE SANTA CLAUSES.

Allen is open about his conservative beliefs, and one line from his new show set-off some Twitter users.

The quote in the question reads: “Saying ‘Merry Christmas to all’ has suddenly become problematic.’”

Apparently, the remark from Calvin was too conservative for some viewers, comparing Calvin’s character to Donald Trump.

“Santa had the red hat all along and we just ignored it,” one user wrote in reference to the “Make America Great Again” hats.

The scene that caused the frostbite depicts Calvin being asked if something was bothering him, to which he responds that “saying ‘Merry Christmas to all’ has suddenly become problematic.’”

Filmmaker Scott Weinberg originally posted the quote on social media site and let it snowball from there.

“And so we begin another season of ‘They’re trying to cancel Christmas,’” tweeted another user.

Allen has always included family and conservative values in his act.

Movieguide® previously reported:

Allen joined THE VIEW co-host Joy Behar as they reminisced on their comedy careers, which began in the 1980s.

Allen believes that nowadays he needs to provide too much context to set up his routines.

“What I got to do sometimes is explain, which I hate, in big arenas, that this is a thought police thing, and I do not like it. But when I use these words, this is my intent behind those words.”

Allen’s thoughts on PC culture and comedy mirror those of his peer Jerry Seinfeld who made a similar comment in 2019.

However, while Seinfeld is known for inappropriate jokes and language, Allen chooses to keep his routines clean.

“My act has really been about family and growing up anyway,” Allen said.

Allen wrapped up an impressive 40 city comedy tour in 2019. On January 2, 2020, Allen’s conservative-leaning comedy series LAST MAN STANDING, returns for its eighth season.

Allen’s series, though, is different than most shows on-air today. LAST MAN STANDING takes a conservative angle and stresses the importance of faith and family.

“What we wanted to do [on the show] was not make fun of religion, not make fun of family,” Allen said. “[We wanted to] celebrate what’s good about American family.”
