More Detail:
LARGER THAN LIFE is small on comedy and good times. This pachyderm predicament features Bill Murray as Jack Corcoran , a motivational speaker. When he receives a telegram that his father has died, Jack finds out that his inheritance is none other than Vera, a large elephant owned by Jack’s father, who was a circus clown. Stuck with a $35,000 handling fee, Jack has only one thing on his mind: get Vera sold. Jack has two offers in Los Angeles, and so he has to travel cross country to entertain these offers. Jack and Vera finally make it to Southern California. There he must decide between a cash-poor but kind zoo keeper and a Hollywood trainer who can pay $50,000 but is mean to her animals.
For a comedy, there are few laughs. The only funny part of the movie is at the very beginning where Jack is doing some stunts as a motivational speaker. No laughs are manufactured as a result of Vera and her antics. LARGER THAN LIFE doesn’t have any theme or message. Jack doesn’t become a better motivational speaker or a better man. Vera does come to the rescue of a praying church. Though morally clean with only a few obscenities to discredit it, this movie is humorless and has no dramatic punch.
