In NICK OF TIME, Gene Watson, played by Johnny Depp, thinks it is just a normal day. He is on his way to a job interview when he happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time and he and his daughter are taken hostage by people posing as police. Watson is told that he must murder the Governor in the next 90 minutes or his little girl will be killed. If Gene attempts to go to authorities, the kidnappers will kill his daughter. The movie shows how he survives the grueling next hour and a half. Gene eventually persuades Huey, a shoe shine man played by Charles S. Dutton, to listen to him. Huey tells Gene that he will help him out. Gene finally realizes the Governor’s husband and her staff are behind the whole scheme. It is a race to the finish as Gene sneaks into the Governor’s room and tells her of the plan. The last minutes will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
NICK OF TIME is a suspenseful film. The actual-time filming technique adds to the intrigue. The movie is shot so that it depicts what would be going on in a man’s head if he was ever taken hostage. Depp is believable, and Charles S. Dutton also does justice to his role. The movie is marred by the many obscenities and also violence. If they took out the obscenity and violence, NICK OF TIME would be a much better thriller.
