THE MOTHER

What You Need To Know:

THE MOTHER is an acclaimed drama from England about a sixtysomething woman named May who loses her husband while visiting their two children’s families. May can’t stand spending time alone in her own house, so she decides to stay indefinitely with her married son Bobby. At Bobby’s house, she meets Darren, Bobby’s carpenter friend who is adding an elegant conservatory onto Bobby’s house. Although married himself, Darren is estranged from his wife and is having an affair with May’s divorced daughter, Paula. Both Paula and Bobby are detached from May, who is an emotionally withdrawn person. May’s passions suddenly erupt when she starts a secret affair with Darren, her daughter’s boyfriend. Trouble inevitably ensues.

THE MOTHER has artistic pretensions. It spends a lot of time focusing on the fears and social alienation of senior citizens, including May’s detachment from her two children. The rest of the movie, however, is a sick, abhorrent, melodramatic exercise in taboo sex and disturbing emotional conflicts between a mother and her daughter. The movie not only contains graphic sexual images, it also has lots of strong foul language. Its artistic pretensions cannot hide the sick immorality at its heart.

Content:

(RoRoRo, CoCo, PaPaPa, Ho, B, LLL, V, SSS, NNN, AA, DD, MMM) Very strong Romantic worldview with strong Marxist viewpoint about the emotional and sexual plight of senior citizens in today’s modern society, with very strong pagan content where many characters are only really interested in their own hedonistic, selfish feelings, and light homosexual content in one scene where woman teases her mother by asking her how does she know that she has a date with a man and not a woman; one light moral element before most of the negative content where woman mentions praying to God, but the prayer is not fulfilled; 57 mostly strong obscenities, three strong profanities, four light profanities, and one blasphemy; woman punches her mother in the eye, woman contemplates suicide by stabbing herself, man angrily demolishes parts of room he is building, unmarried couple tussles; very strong Kinseyan sexual content includes scenes of implied and depicted fornication, drawing depicts oral sex, drawings depict couples lying naked together, mother cuckolds her daughter, and sixty-something woman sleeps with her divorced daughter’s boyfriend, who’s nearly half the mother’s age; upper female nudity, upper male nudity, nude sculptures in art museum, and crude drawings of naked couples, including one graphic depiction of male sex organ during sex act; alcohol use and drunkenness; smoking and man snorts cocaine in one scene; and, deceit, jealousy, rage, and very negative portrayal of families and older people, despite the movie’s pretensions of sympathy for senior citizens.
