Signings at Sundance

By Evy Baehr, Associate Editor of MOVIEGUIDE®

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has written, directed, and produced a movie entitled DON JON’S ADDICTION that premiered at the 2013 Sundance film festival.

It has received the largest bid for a film so far.  Relativity has paid $4 Million for rights to distribute it, with a commitment to spend $25 million on marketing and a wide release.  However, the movie is said to have graphic sexual content that would lead to an NC-17 rating. This rating usually results in an extremely low box office return for the movie.  As Movieguide® states time after time, only a very small audience will attend movies with an NC-17 rating.

DON JON’S ADDICTION is the story of a man who is a womanizer and bartender and has an addiction to pornography.  He tries to find love when meeting the character played by Scarlett Johansson.  Apparently, the movie portrays the inability for the porn addicted character to be intimate with a real women, because of his expectations.  Levitt’s movie is based on the famous written work by Tirso de Molina, which was originally written as a morality tale. Originally showing the book’s character Don Juan as a man who seduces many women and therefore is sent to Hell for not following God.

Based on what we know, Movieguide® advises extreme content. We will have a review when the movie opens.
