Former pro surfer Bethany Hamilton encourages her followers to “slow down” and “be present” around the family dinner table.
“In a world that moves so fast, the table reminds us to slow down. To look each other in the eye. To listen. Be present. Pray. Share stories,” she wrote in an Instagram video. “The moments that matter aren’t perfect, they’re real. And they often start right here…around the table.”
In the post’s caption, Hamilton shared, “Jesus often met people around a table. Connection. Grace. Presence. Maybe we should follow His lead and make time for the ones we love most, because that’s where goodness happens.”

The surfer often encourages her social media followers to be present, especially when it comes to spending time with their children.
In one Instagram post, Hamilton wrote, “Being present with our children matters. It’s not about getting it all right. It’s about showing up consistently…especially with our attention and not always with a phone in hand.”
She continued. “Listening. Being curious. Opening our ears when they rant about things they are excited about. Those little moments, I imagine, matter more than we realize.”
“Presence matters more than perfection. Keep showing up, keep listening, and keep being there,” Hamilton concluded.
Hamilton recently marked the anniversary of the shark attack that led to her losing her left arm, which took place in 2003.
“I don’t even know how many years it’s been,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “Oddly enough I lost my arm on October 31st! But grateful to God to be here loving on my fam, adventuring through life, trusting God through the ups and downs and sharing my journey with you along the way!”
In an interview with Beliefnet, the surfer said the shark attack made her “more deeply committed” to her love for Jesus, adding, “[I] take my relationship with Him more seriously than ever.”
“I realize that God loves everyone sooooooo much, and that He is always looking for a voice to share about His love.” she continued. “I have definitely had to get very real and serious about my walk with God and had to decide if I am really real in my commitments to serve and obey Him.”
Whether it’s being fully present while spending time with family or recognizing the opportunity God gave her to share her faith, Hamilton keeps faith at the forefront of her life.
