Power couple Russell Wilson and Ciara are part of the team bringing the real-life story of Sarah Rector to life in the new movie SARAH’S OIL.
“Sarah’s story is full of rich history,” Ciara told Forbes. “Her story is one that needs to continue to be told. There’s Sarah in me. The story of faith and love is an inspirational story; I feel like everyone needs to hear.”
SARAH’S OIL tells the story of Sarah Rector, “an African American girl born in Oklahoma Indian Territory in the early 1900s, who believes there is oil beneath the barren land she’s allotted and whose faith is proven right,” per the movie’s website.
“As greedy oil sharks close in, Sarah turns to her family, friends, and some Texas wildcatters to maintain control of her oil-rich land, eventually becoming among the nation’s first female African American millionaires — at eleven years old,” the description continues.

Movieguide® reviewed SARAH’S OIL positively, spotlighting its “extremely well written” script, as well as its “inspiring, uplifting Christian, moral worldview.”
Ciara continued, “Russ [Russell Wilson] and I have the Why Not You Productions company telling the stories of faith. Having stories that have impact and inspire in such big ways and spark that ‘why not you’ energy and spirit in someone is important to us. So, for so many reasons, we were excited and gravitated to her story and wanted to tell it and be a part of telling each other on our platform to put her story out there.”
Wilson added, “We’re here…telling a story about faith and this young Black girl who’s 11 years old, who becomes one of the wealthiest young girls in America. It’s all because she had faith, a ridiculous, unwavering faith, and that’s what Ciara has, and that’s what I want my daughter Sienna to have. That’s why I want my daughter Amora to have.”
Ciara echoed her husband’s comments, saying she wants her daughters to know they are “empowered by the gifts that God gave [them]” and “can pursue [their] dreams and go and become everything [they want] to be, with the same spirit of faith and hope that Sarah had within herself.”
“I just think that it’s just — this is a blessing to do this and be here in New York City for our premiere of SARAH’S OIL,” Wilson continued. “It’s a great story. I can’t wait for families, kids, and people to see it all over.”
Julie Rapaport, Head of Film, Production and Development at Amazon MGM Studios, told Deadline, “SARAH’S OIL is a film that is truly a labor of love. We’re honored to take part in telling the inspiring true story of Sarah Rector, and we cannot wait for audiences to experience it on the big screen.”
