What to Know About Prime Video’s Add-On Channels

Amazon Prime subscribers can add many of their other streaming services to their account, making Prime Video a one-stop shop for their favorite shows and movies.

“What we offer channel partners is hundreds of millions of subscribers around the world,” said Mike Hopkins, SVP and Head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios. “We see a lot more engagement, we’re able to get subscribers for those businesses at a really attractive rate.”

Last year, Apple TV+ joined the growing list of streamers who are Prime add-ons. Currently Prime Video boasts more than 100 other streaming services, and at this point, Netflix, Disney+ and Hulu are the only major streamers still unavailable.

“Prime Video is a first-stop entertainment destination offering a wide selection of premium programming,” Hopkins said last October when announcing the partnership. “As we continue to expand our offering and make it easy for customers to personalize their streaming experience directly in one app, we are proud to welcome Apple TV+ and its popular and critically acclaimed shows, films and events to Prime Video.”

While the add-on system enables a great ease of access, it can also lead to confusion when users are shown shows and movies that they are told to pay for when they try to access them. This is because all of the services included as an add-on still require their normal subscriptions for this access.

To help alleviate confusion, Amazon has worked to make it more clear what is and is not included in a user’s current subscriptions.

“We’re always listening to customers and reviewing feedback, and it’s clear that many are in search of a more intuitive streaming experience,” said Kam Keshmiri, vice president of Design at Prime Video. “With the improvements we have made to the user experience, customers will be presented with an easy-to-navigate entertainment destination where they can discover new titles and enjoy favorites, as well as sign-up or switch add-on subscriptions with just a few clicks. Best of all, they can do this while using a single login.”

So how do you actually ad on these channels? CableTV.com explains:

From the top menu of the Prime Video home screen, choose “Channels.” From there, you can add channels to your account or access channels you’ve already subscribed to in the “Your Channels” menu section. All Channels content is displayed below that menu. Shows and movies on channels you’re not subscribed to will display a yellow “$” on the corner tab.

One annoying aspect of the streaming era is the siloing of content onto platforms that can be a pain to navigate to. Prime Video’s add-on feature resolves this issue, helping users enjoy all of their content in one place, rather than constantly navigating different streamers.
