Grammy award winner Lee Greenwood would be more than happy to replace Bad Bunny as the Super Bowl’s halftime show performer.
“I didn’t even know who Bad Bunny was. But it sounds like a terrible decision, in my view, from what I’m hearing,” House Speaker Mike Johnson told PEOPLE. “It sounds like he’s not someone who appeals to a broader audience. And there are so many eyes on the Super Bowl — for a lot of young and impressionable children…In my view, you would have Lee Greenwood or role models doing that. Not somebody like this.”
Greenwood later told the New York Post, “I agree with Speaker Johnson. I would make a great performer for any Super Bowl show.”
“I perform for various NFL teams every year, especially during their Salute to Service games,” the country star continued. “As a matter of fact, I will be doing halftime for the Dallas Cowboys during Monday Night Football on Nov. 3. Football is one of America’s most watched sports, and I am always thrilled to perform the anthem or ‘God Bless the USA’ during the games.”
He added: “Maybe the NFL will have me perform this year at the Super Bowl prior to the game to have a stadium full of football fans singing ‘God Bless the USA’ to kick-off the game!”
The NFL has taken heat for choosing Bad Bunny, a Puerto Rican rapper. Fox News reported that he “expressed fears about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He said earlier this month that he didn’t book any U.S. dates for his tour over fears that fans would be detained by ICE agents.” Others have been critical of his Spanish-language music catalog.
Other government official spoke out about the NFL’s decision to choose Bad Bunny.
President Donald Trump said, “I’ve never heard of him,” per Variety.
“I don’t know who he is…I don’t know why they’re doing it. It’s crazy. And then they blame it on some promoter they hired to pick up entertainment — I think it’s absolutely ridiculous,” Trump added.
This debate has sparked such outrage that Turning Point USA decided to host its own Super Bowl halftime show.
“It’s true, Turning Point USA is thrilled to announce The All American Halftime Show. Performers and event details coming soon,” Turning Point USA shared on all its social media accounts.
