Disney will move forward with plans for a live-action TANGLED movie, with plans to cast a major Hollywood star as Mother Gothel.
Variety reported that, while the project was put “indefinitely on pause” earlier this year, plans for the live-action movie are now back in motion.
“Casting hasn’t been solidified, but Scarlett Johansson is being eyed to star as Mother Gothel,” the outlet revealed.

The original TANGLED, released in 2010, retells of the fairy tale of Rapunzel. Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi starred in the project as Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, respectively.
It’s still unknown who the studio is eyeing to play Rapunzel, but supermodel Gigi Hadid revealed to Vogue that she auditioned for the role.
“I was really proud of my scene,” she said, then joked, “The singing…I knew they were going to go with a real singer.”
MY OXFORD YEAR star Corey Mylchreest also auditioned for the movie, telling Seventeen Magazine, “I think I can say this now because I don’t think it’s happening anymore, but I auditioned for TANGLED.”
“We don’t have the footage anymore. I deleted it and then I burnt it and then I burnt the phone that I filmed on,” the actor joked. “And then I burnt the room that I did it in. And then I burnt myself… No, it wasn’t very good. They then told me that they wanted someone with singing experience.”
It was announced that Disney planned to make a live-action version of the movie earlier this year, but those plans were put on hold after Disney’s live-action SNOW WHITE tanked at the box office.
“SNOW WHITE didn’t fare well with the critics nor audiences,” The Hollywood Reporter wrote, adding, “It remains uncertain whether TANGLED will move forward down the road or undergo a creative rethink.”
However, the box office success of LILO & STITCH, another live-action remake, might have encouraged Disney to look at TANGLED again.
“The original SNOW WHITE was released in 1937 and is no longer the rage with kids today,” Variety noted. “Meanwhile LILO & STITCH, based on the 2002 film, never waned in popularity; it’s been a top title on Disney+ and, in 2024 alone, drove over $2.6 billion in retail sales…Clearly the studio is hoping that TANGLED has a similar cache with younger audiences.”
The live-action version of TANGLED still has a long way to go before production officially starts, but fans of the original are excited to hear that Disney is resuming their plans for the movie.
