Greta Gerwig’s NARNIA: THE MAGICIAN’S NEPHEW has been picked up for global distribution by Sony Pictures Entertainment.

“The epic adventure will be released in Imax and in theaters worldwide on Feb. 12, 2027, and will debut on Netflix on April 2, 2027,” Variety reported, adding that Netflix will handle domestic distribution to theater chains like AMC, Regal and Cinemark, as well as thousands of regional and independent theaters.

Dan Lin, chairman of Netflix Film, made an earlier statement about THE MAGICIAN’S NEPHEW’s theatrical release, calling it “exactly the kind of bold, ambitious filmmaking we love to champion.”

“While most of our films debut on Netflix, sometimes a film like this comes along and we can give the filmmaker a different canvas and fans a theatrical experience that complements its Netflix release,” he continued. “I can’t wait for people to discover NARNIA: THE MAGICIAN’S NEPHEW, and then fall in love with it again and again streaming on Netflix.”

Written and directed by the LITTLE WOMEN filmmaker, this movie will be the first ever adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ The Magician’s Nephew.

“It’s all very under wraps right now, but it’s something that I’m just so thrilled about because it was the book of my childhood,” Gerwig shared at a recent “Next on Netflix” event. “It was the book series that I loved, and I lived through, and I spent so much time imagining myself inside of Narnia…It’s been a joy and an honor to be the person who gets to imagine this universe.”

THE MAGICIAN’S NEPHEW’s cast includes big names like Daniel Craig, Meryl Streep, Carey Mulligan and Emma Mackey.

Some have expressed concern about the fact that Streep will provide the voice of Aslan. In a piece written by Movieguide®’s Dr. Ted Baehr, he explained, “The default position of the world’s Christian community is that they want this material, and importantly, its underlying themes, to reach as many human beings as possible, and therefore they want the Netflix effort to succeed. They will be gasoline to the fire of the movie’s success.”

“But, if these underlying themes are diminished, ignored or even sabotaged, the Christian community will vocally distance themselves from the project and even ‘cancel’ the film,” he explained. “While there are only two absolutely critical components of Christianity (who Christ is and what he did), like-wise with Narnia, the nature and mission of Aslan is critical. Any studio, writer, musician or artist who tampers with the nature and mission of Aslan, must expect some negative feedback.”

NARNIA: THE MAGICIAN’S NEPHEW premieres in theaters around the world Feb. 12, 2027.
