SOUND OF FREEDOM director Alejandro Monteverde will direct a new biopic about Antoni Gaudí, the man behind the world’s largest cathedral.

Monteverde will write and direct the movie, Variety reported. The biopic will be produced by Spain’s Onza, Methos Media and Mexico’s Fábrica de Cine, which made THE IRISHMAN and SILENCE. Gastón Pavlovich will produce alongside Leo Severino and Gonzalo Sagardía, Onza’s CEO.

The movie will depict Gaudí as an intelligent creative force who shaped the architecture of Catalonia. He was an elite architect before he withdrew into a more faith-centered existence.

He’s best known for his Basílica de la Sagrada Família, the largest cathedral in the world, which has been in progress since 1882. Seven of Gaudí’s works are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

“For me, Gaudí was a challenger of the architecture of his time. But to truly understand Gaudí, one must understand the inner battles that shaped his vision,” Monteverde said. “That is why, more than a biography of his life, this film is a biography of his soul. Just as he found inspiration in the geometry of nature, I am drawn to the geometry of his spirit: the invisible forces that shaped one of the most extraordinary creative minds in history.”

Pavlovich said it is an honor to be included in the project.

“Telling the story of the great Gaudí in the context of the official inauguration of his masterpiece is nothing less than inspiring,” Pavlovich said.

Sagardía said, “We have the ideal ingredients for the production to be a success: a strong budget, Alejandro Monteverde’s extraordinary talent and a fascinating story, which is also true. Gaudí is an internationally known figure whose works are visited by nearly five million people every year, with a life full of drama, deep spirituality, plot twists and a tragic ending.”

Severino called it one of the most important projects they will ever have.

On June 10, Pope Leo XIV commemorated the 100th anniversary of Gaudi’s death at the Sagrada Familia, where he performed a mass in front of 8,500 and unveiled a plaque to honor Gaudi.

An AI architecture artist, Theirry Lechanteur, brought to life one of Gaudi’s unrealized projects in honor of the anniversary. Guadi had sketches of a cluster of nine skyscrapers, the tallest at 853 feet, meant to be built somewhere in Lower Manhattan. It was a proposal requested by two businessman who wanted Gaudi’s hand in making a massive hotel.

Gaudi was one of the world’s greatest and most creative architects. Monteverde’s SOUND OF FREEDOM, the true story of a federal agent who rescued children from trafficking, was one of the top 10 domestic releases in 2023. We can’t wait to see what he does with this upcoming Gaudi biopic.
