THE ROOKIE Season 8 ended with a bang, and fans eagerly look forward to Season 9.
Here’s everything we know about it.
“John Nolan, once the oldest rookie in the LAPD, now uses his life experience, determination and sense of humor to keep up with rookies 20+ years his junior,” Season 9’s logline reads. “John and the team must navigate the intense, unpredictable nature of their jobs and personal challenges, while uplifting the next generation of first responders.”
The cast includes Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, Mekia Cox as Nyla Harper, Alyssa Diaz as Angela Lopez, Richard T. Jones as Wade Grey, Melissa O’Neil as Lucy Chen and more season regulars.
The official release date isn’t announced, but the midseason show will likely to come out in January 2027, per TV Insider.
Season 8 ended with an international crime lord back in custody and Tim and Lucy’s beachside proposal turned bad as the newly engaged couple get kidnapped.
Showrunner Alexi Hawley said, “I think we should be worried [about them] for sure. I mean, as a show, we definitely push the envelope with some of our characters and stuff like that. And there are real stakes on the show.”

“That said, I also don’t want to send the internet scrambling and freaking out too much, but I do think that, yes, that the stakes are real, that ultimately where we would find them in Season 9, which is still a little — we need to figure it out, the writers’ room hasn’t started yet and stuff like that. But I think you’re right, there is a reason they were taken and not killed,” he explained.
He hinted there will be things that the team needs to figure out before Lucy and Tim make it back to them.
The finale also revealed that Wesley joined Everett’s legal team to secretly investigate Malcolm, the lawyer for a serial killer.
“That is a journey for Season 9,” said Hawley. “This is a guy who’s sort of the worst version of a defense lawyer and now as Wesley’s all the way back into being a defense lawyer, it’s going to be interesting because who Wesley is after being in the DA’s office and after really becoming team police is different than it used to be when he was defending people like Elijah [Brandon Jay McLaren] and stuff like that. And so that’ll be interesting going forward to see where that line is set now.”
Season 8 also saw the death of villain Monica Stevens.
“It felt like it was time. Ultimately, it felt like she’d escaped a lot of things,” Hawley said. “And I never like to just tread water or feel like we’re telling the same story over and over. So I think it just felt like it was a natural end.”
Lisseth Chavez said she has some hopes for her character in Season 9.
“I would like to go fully undercover, but, like, unrecognizable undercover, where just like people are like, ‘Was Celina in this episode?’” she said.
With the team perhaps having to rescue Tim and Lucy, there just might be an opportunity for that.
