Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell have been friends for 33 years now, ever since they were child actors together on KENAN & KEL, and their friendship is as strong as ever.
When asked on DEN OF GEEK what the secret to their friendship is, Thompson joked, “You got to ask Oprah,” before getting more serious.
“What’s the secret? You know, just similar, like, upbringings,” he explained. “A lot of characteristics in our families are very similar. Chicago and 90210 are very, like, royal kind of hometowns.”
“…and we like to have a good time,” Thompson added.
Mitchell chimed in, “It’s in the sauce.”
Thompson explained that a huge part of their friendship is the humor they share together. “I’m just laughing all the time. Make each other laugh. That’s a big part of it,” he said.
People in the comment section appreciated the nostalgia that the duo’s friendship brings.

“Two legends loved watching them when I was growing up 90s kids lol. Even the theme song ‘aww here it goes’ loved it to this day,” one fan said.
Another added, “Glad they worked out their differences from the past and got close again.”
At one point, the pair seemed to abandon their friendship.
“It was more of a separation that kind of grew into the traditional terms of what a falling out is, which is like not a lot of communication,” Thompson said in 2023. “Originally, it was just us kind of looking for our own individualism, basically, as adults, taking a breather from being a duo because we both came into the game as individuals.”
He added, “We were placed together because we worked so well together and all that. It was just a journey of being adults. Time passes and more time passes, and it just became ridiculous.”
Just a few moments of communication solved the awkwardness.
“When you have a real friendship, it was five minutes into the phone call, we were back” Thompson said. “It was like, what were we waiting on all this time? You just never really know until you actually have that talk.”
The friends are working together again, recently creating an mobile game called “Orange Pop.” They donated some of the proceeds to charity.
“We’re excited to have our own game out. When fans play, it’s a lot of surprises that are inside of it too that you’re going to love,” Mitchell shared. “You’re gonna unlock stuff in there. A lot of fun secrets.”
Kenan and Kel’s friendship is a reminder that communication, forgiveness and a touch of humor can heal anything.
