Greta Gerwig’s long-awaited NARNIA project has finally scored a release date.

“Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Greta Gerwig’s NARNIA: THE MAGICIAN’S NEPHEW, an epic adventure, will release in IMAX and wide globally in theaters on February 12, 2027, and on Netflix on April 2, 2027. Sneak previews only in IMAX will begin on February 10, 2027,” a press release from the streamer announced.

Gerwig shared, “Working with Netflix to bring this film to life has been extraordinary and IMAX continues to be an incredible partner. I cannot wait for people to see the film in theaters on February 12 and on Netflix on April 2.”

“I was a child when I first read The Magician’s Nephew, and I fell in love with the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life,” she continued. “I didn’t know that I would grow up to make films, but a universe built out of music is an idea that always lived in my heart. It is the honor of a lifetime to be asked to imagine it into being. Because of C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, I believed in magic and hidden worlds and adventure. I believed that anywhere could be enchanted and that anyone could be swept up into an epic. That wonder and awe was available to everyone, even ordinary people like me…It transformed me.”

The C.S. Lewis Company called Gerwig’s enthusiasm for the project “incredibly moving,” adding, “We’re so excited for audiences everywhere to experience her vision — and to share the magic of Narnia with a whole new generation.”

The cast includes David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell as leads, alongside Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep, The Christian Post reported.

While Gerwig said in a 2024 interview that she has “a particular sense of wanting to do it correctly,” some have raised concerns about changes to the source material — most notably, the casting of Streep as Aslan, a male character.

“The commercial opportunities that come with this cultural saturation cannot afford to be ignored. The treatment of Lewis’ material can either detract from the core preferences of the modern western mindset, or it can speak to them, and tap into them at a very emotional level,” Movieguide® founder Dr. Ted Baehr explained. “Netflix is in a key position to capitalize on this.  It is a business opportunity that should be recognized and carefully nurtured.”

He continued, “The commercial realities of keeping faith with the original intentions of the author are far further reaching than the implication on any given moviegoer’s preferences. Throughout the globe, there are many millions of Christian people who, in partnership with Netflix, will form a catalytic coalition capable of propelling the work and its influence to stellar box office performance.

“The converse is also true,” Dr. Baehr explained. “There have been numerous films that have suffered lack-luster box office performance because of a lack of reverence to the source material and/or a misunderstanding/misrepresentation of the underlying deeply held cultural principles….It is worth noting that production houses would do well to partner with this large population of moviegoers when appropriate.”

NARNIA: THE MAGICIAN’S NEPHEW premieres in theaters Feb. 12, 2017.
