Hip-hop artist Torey D’Shaun never thought he’d be a Christian artist, but God had other plans.

Explaining to Relevant Magazine that he had always been more interested in sports, D’Shaun then shared he encountered Jesus and was saved at 17.

“Music somehow ended up coming back around,” he said. “I feel like the Lord just brought it back around. It was like, I want you to do it now.”

D’Shaun started making music when he was 20, with no real plans to widely release his songs. However, he quickly scored a distribution deal with Trackstars’ Nectar imprint, a Sony partnership for independent Christian hip-hop artists.

“Once that happened, I was like, I’m with it,” the artist said. “The rest was history.”

D’Shaun has gone on to release several singles, as well as debut album Come And See in 2024, and stressed that his songs all come from a deeper place.

“My music just has to have a message for it to mean something to me,” he explained. “If it don’t got a message, then it’s really not going to mean nothing to me.”

In a 2019 interview with Rapzilla, D’Shaun said he “just thank[s] God” for his musical success.

He shared that he relies on his faith when he suffers moments of self-doubt, comparing himself to other artists.

“That’s where that reshaping your mind has to come in and you’re like, ‘Man, we’re all on the same team. Those are my brothers and sisters in Christ,’” D’Shaun said. “In the kingdom, a lot of the times, it’s not about how much talent you have. God places certain people in certain places for a reason, and you got to learn to be content with what God has given and not covet what God hasn’t given you. So once God is your number one priority and making disciples is your number one priority, all of that levels stuff just kind of starts fading.”

D’Shaun is one of many up-and-coming Christian hip-hop artists, a genre that has started taking off recently.

James “Trig” Rosseau Sr., CEO of Holy Culture Radio, told KSAT that listeners are looking for “something soul-feeding, something forward-looking, positive…They find a sonic coziness, but then a message that is feeding that need.”

Ryan Ofei, a former member of Christian act Maverick City Music, agreed, sharing, “You can bob your head [to the music], you can have a long drive, but the whole time, you’re still edified, and you can still feel the presence of the Lord.”

D’Shaun’s fans are excited to hear what the Christian artist has in store for upcoming projects.
