Six months after A MINECRAFT MOVIE set the box office on fire, the makers of the movie announced a sequel is in the works and is set to hit theaters July 2027.
“Building terrain. See you in theaters July 23, 2027,” Legendary and Warner Bros. posted on Instagram along with a picture of two pickaxes resting on top of a crafting table.

A MINECRAFT MOVIE has proven to be one of the most successful movies of the year, grossing just under $1 billion at the global box office, sitting it at the No. 3 movie of the year. It was also been extremely important for the industry, helping the summer box office to start strong after a string of weak movies at the beginning of the year. Many of this year’s successes – such as the multiple superhero movies that have proven the genre is not dead – have A MINECRAFT MOVIE to thank for their popularity.
The movie excelled because it stayed true to its source material while providing a fun story that people of all ages could enjoy. The sequel would do well to follow the same formula, while introducing more parts of the game that were left out of the original movie. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
A MINECRAFT MOVIE is a funny, light-hearted tale with deep meaning. It has a strong redemptive, morally uplifting worldview where people find meaning, strength, love, and courage in friendship to fight evil. A once self-absorbed character risks his life to save his friend. The evil queen says to hope, dream and create is to suffer, but the hero rebukes her by telling her that cowards choose to destroy things because it’s easier. A MINECRAFT MOVIE has lots of action violence, some light foul and crude language, rude humor and some scary images. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children and young teenagers.
With writer and director Jared Hess returning for the second movie, it seems more likely than not that the sequel will continue down the same path, as he is committed to those values while also working within the confines of the game.
“The game itself is so creative, but it’s also ridiculous and really funny and absurd in so many ways. That was so much of the appeal to me in adapting it,” Hess said in April. “It was like, how can you just do a ridiculously fun and funny adventure movie in this world — all of those goofy, dorky things we just really tried to celebrate and were super conscious of while making it?”
“There [were] also physics and rules of the gameplay we applied to the movie, so anything that we built in the film that you fans could go back and create in the game,” he added. “That was a super-important element, but we also wanted to push it as well and create a new experience beyond just the gameplay.”
A MINECRAFT MOVIE 2 is set to hit theaters on July 23, 2027.
