Is Monopoly finally coming to the big screen?

“Lionsgate, LuckyChap and Hasbro Entertainment are partnering with two star writing teams — Neil Widener & Gavin James (A MINECRAFT MOVIE) and Rebecca Angelo & Lauren Schuker Blum (DUMB MONEY) — to flesh out ideas for a Monopoly movie based on the iconic board game,” Deadline reported

The outlet added that studio insiders have made it clear the project is in the “very early days” of its development and “there’s no telling which way things go with this project.”

Sources say the studio has been “presented with two outlines and will commission one script from there.”

Many Hollywood insiders will believe it when they see it. Studios have been trying to get a Monopoly movie off the ground for decades; this latest attempt is the sixth time a movie based on the board game has entered development.

Previous attempts included a movie led by director Ridley Scott, as well as one that would have starred Kevin Hart.

This isn’t the only boardgame movie Hollywood is working on. In March, it was announced that Amazon MGM Studios, Chernin Entertainment and Hasbro are working on a movie based on The Game of Life.

“Insiders say Chernin and Hasbro had been trying for some time to figure out an idea for a Game of Life movie and, following a meeting [screenwriter Allan] Loeb, found the angle and quickly set up the package, tapping [Sean] Anders to direct,” Deadline reported. “Amazon moved fast to board the project and the film will now be a big priority at the studio as Loeb pens the script.”

Additionally, a Clue miniseries is in the works at Peacock, helmed by writer and showrunner Dana Fox, who most recently penned WICKED: FOR GOOD. Fox will also executive produce, alongside Nichols Stoller, who will direct as well.

Netflix is also reportedly using the boardgame as inspiration for an upcoming competition show.

“Details remain scarce, but Netflix says that players will have to undergo physical and mental challenges in order to receive clues, with characters like [Colonel] Mustard, Professor Plum and others all represented,” The Hollywood Reporter revealed. “There will also be red herrings to throw players off the case.”

From movies and miniseries to reality competition shows, it looks like there will be no shortage of projects about our favorite boardgames in the future.
