Beloved deck building game Ascension announced that it will expand its world through a new Lord of the Rings game that takes players through the entire arc of Tolkien’s epic story.
“Twenty year ago, I became obsessed with game design. And 15 years ago, that turned into the very first version of Ascension. But long before any of that, I was obsessed with the incredible heroes and iconic villains of The Lord of the Rings,” Justin Gary, the creator of Ascension, said in a teaser for the upcoming game.
“I am beyond excited to finally be able to bring The Lord of the Rings into the Ascension universe with a ‘Lord of the Rings Ascension,’” he celebrated. “My team and I have spent over a year building mechanics that are custom to Lord of the Rings… There is so much more to reveal as we go through the entire story arc of The Lord of the Rings, but for now, I’ll just invite you to join me in following this campaign and helping bring the world of Middle-earth to life.”

Players will face the pressure of saving the world and fighting to resist temptation as they take a similar journey to Frodo and meet all of the iconic characters along the way.
“The fate of the world hangs by a thread…Recruit heroes, acquire powerful cards, and shape your strategy as you build your strength, all while confronting the quiet, ever-present pull of The One Ring,” a description of the game reads. “The game is fast to learn and difficult to master; each choice carries weight, and the path to victory is never without cost.”
Gary added, “Middle-earth comes alive in your own hands as you’re able to build a deck with the heroes of The Fellowship.”
This upcoming project adds to a slew of new Lord of the Rings content released in recent years and coming soon.
Other upcoming projects include a third season of LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RING OF POWER and a new movie that takes place right after Bilbo Baggins’ 111th birthday party and explores Gollum’s story, titled LORD OF THE RINGS: THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM.
“The Gollum/Sméagol character has always fascinated me because Gollum reflects the worst of human nature, whilst his Sméagol side is, arguably, quite sympathetic,” Peter Jackson told Deadline in May 2024 of the movie. “I think he connects with readers and film audiences alike, because there’s a little bit of both of them in all of us.”
“We really want to explore his backstory and delve into those parts of his journey we didn’t have time to cover in the earlier films,” he continued. “It’s too soon to know who will cross his path, but suffice to say we will take our lead from Professor Tolkien.”
Lord of the Rings fans have a lot to look forward to, and the new Ascension game will provide a fun and exciting way to interact with the story while embarking on their own adventure through Middle-earth.
