As of March 2, Netflix is no longer supported on the PS3, removing the streamer from a device that sold over 87 million units across the world.

PS3 users who attempt to access the platform will now be met with the message, “Unfortunately, Netflix will no longer be available on this device after March 2, 2026,” per Daily Mail. “Visit netflix.com/compatible devices to see a list of supported devices.”

While the PS3 has been an outdated video game console for 13 years, users on Reddit still shared their heartbreak about losing this way to access Netflix. One user pointed out that the PS3 was the last device with native support for CRT viewing in a 4:3 format, while others simply lamented losing support for their device of choice.

The PS3 was the last console of its generation to host Netflix, with its peers losing access years ago. This difference largely comes from the PS3’s virtual store remaining operational, as opposed to its counterparts who shut down their virtual stores long ago. The app on the PS3 likely started to pose problems for Netflix as 13 years of innovation would have made it hard to send data to the PS3 consoles for viewing. Furthermore, the PS3 did not support the ad-tier, making it even less compatible with Netflix’s current streaming models.

“We’re making good progress and the opportunity ahead of us is massive,” the streamer’s co-CEO Greg Peters said on a recent call with investors about the success of the ad-tier.

Last year, the streamer’s advertising revenue accounted for 3% of the platform’s total full-year revenue, a number that is predicted to double next year.

While the streamer’s entry into ads at the end of 2022 was seen as a gamble at first, this move has certainly paid off as more than half of its new subscribers now sign up for that plan. While the upfront cost of this tier is lower for users, it ends up making Netflix more money in the long run as the streamer is directly rewarded for a viewer’s watch time.

As Netflix looks to continue forward with its pushes into new territory, it is understandable, though sometimes sad, that older technology gets put to the wayside. Beyond technological advances, Netflix is also changing its content strategy to capture the attention of viewers who are used to the fast-paced, ever-changing content that they scroll through on social media.
