THE CHOSEN ADVENTURES writer Ryan Swanson explained how he intentionally created the show to feel like a story, rather than leaning into the over stimulation that most kids content falls into today.
“My friends wanted something that felt like story time, and THE CHOSEN ADVENTURES, we wanted to stay true to how we’ve told that story, which, you know, it takes its time. It lets you in and introduces you to the characters first and leads with that,” Swanson told Movieguide®. “And we feel like we wanted these stories to be relatable and universal, but also stories that were personal to us.”

“And, you know, it just wasn’t in Dallas [Jenkins]’s or my DNA to do, a sort of, you know, [a] line zinger show that just moved at a slap-dash pace,” he continued. “We wanted to, you know, use the same sort of storytelling we’re doing with THE CHOSEN and tell these stories.”
Not only does the show follow similar pacing to THE CHOSEN, but it also uses the same characters as it takes place in the same universe. Jonathan Roumie plays Jesus, for example, and the animated character looks like Roumie, too. The show also comes with the expected level of Biblical literacy as it teaches its young viewers the most important lessons from the Bible. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
The first six episodes of THE CHOSEN ADVENTURES are very engaging, with lots of humor. They have a strong and inspiring Christian, biblical worldview. Abby and her friends learn lessons about God’s sovereignty, forgiveness, compassion, and gratitude. The series also features strong examples of friendship, family and marriage. The first six episodes of THE CHOSEN ADVENTURES are free of any questionable content. They contain a few instances of cartoon peril, which could be lightly troubling for very young viewers.
The choice to use the same actors as in the main show came after parents told THE CHOSEN creators that their children often watch with them. Now they will be able to enjoy the story of Jesus through a show designed for them to teach them lessons aimed specifically at their age group.
“We were surprised and encouraged to discover that children have been watching THE CHOSEN alongside their parents, so we wanted to continue the family co-viewing experience by creating an animated series that is full of humor, heartfelt life lessons, and loveable characters,” Swanson explained when the show was first announced.
THE CHOSEN ADVENTURES is now available to stream through Prime Video, and while it is aimed for children, any age will enjoy it.
