Influencers Dan and Sam Matthews have amassed a following on social media through their adventurous lives, and they say seeking adventure lines up with a life lived for the Lord.

“We just want people to understand that God doesn’t want us to live a stagnant life. If you look through the stories in the Bible, you can’t find anywhere God is like, ‘Hey, just stay where you’re at. Don’t change a thing. Long-term, [I] just want you to hunker down and be comfortable.’ He’s always calling people. He’s telling people to go,” Dan told the “Jesus Calling” podcast. “We want people to understand that’s what He’s wanting from us.”

“If all we do is desire comfort, it really is not healthy to just be comfortable all the time,” he continued. “You should be pushed. There should be things that scare you. There should be things that get your heart racing. When we do that, and when we’re in line with the Lord’s will, we just feel like that’s the most fulfilling life you can have.”

This call from the Lord to push us to our limits is seen, for example, in the story of Moses. While meeting the Lord in the burning bush, God tells Moses to return to Egypt to save His people from the oppression of Pharaoh. However, instead of rejoicing at this call, Moses instead comes up with a list of reasons why he cannot be the one for this job.

“But Moses said to God, ‘Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” Moses says in Exodus 3:11.

“‘Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue,’” Moses adds in Exodus 4:10, continuing in Exodus 4:13, “‘Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else.”

While the Lord still used Moses to achieve His mission to free Israel, it would have been all the better had Moses not questioned the Lord and tried not to be the one to save his people.

Dan and Sam, similarly, encourage people to go along with the Lord’s adventure, rather than try to fight it. For them, recently, that has looked like downsizing instead of chasing more money and more possessions.

We want to be in a place where we need the Lord, where we are relying on the Lord. Sometimes those moments of little square footage or little things require you to trust the Lord more,” Sam said. “So trying to keep ourselves grounded even with more, to just still be intentional about the things that we bring into our home.”

It is amazing to see how Dan and Sam remain rooted in the Lord despite their incredible success on social media. They also serve as models for us all to trust in the Lord and follow His adventure for our lives, rather than fight against His plans for the sake of our safety and comfort.
