Director Brad Bird rejected the possibility of a sequel for RATATOUILLE, even though Pixar asked him for one.

The fact that Pixar asked isn’t a surprise, as sequels from the studio, like TOY STORY 5, INSIDE OUT 2 and upcoming THE INCREDIBLES 3, abound. But according to Bird, RATATOUILLE doesn’t need that treatment.

“No. I don’t,” Bird told Collider when asked if he wants to make a sequel. “They’ve made little feints towards that to see how I would react. They’ll, like, crack a joke, but the joke will be a little bit serious, like, ‘Would you?’ And I’m like, ‘No, we told that story.'”

“Any time you do something that ends up connecting with people, they automatically think, ‘How about another?’ People have mentioned it about THE IRON GIANT, which is hilarious to me because the film didn’t succeed at all in its initial release. It’s caught up in time, but what would you do to follow that up? He’s lumbering around, still undiscovered? In other words, to me, that story is told,” he explained.

The 2007 RATATOUILLE was one of Disney’s best films to date. It set a “record for an animated film at the time with five Oscar nominations, including a win for Best Animated Feature,” Collider reported.

Movieguide® awarded the movie, which follows rat Remy as he makes his culinary dreams come true in Paris, a Teddy Bear Award® in 2008, naming it the Best Movie for Families that year.

“RATATOUILLE is a wonderful, savory concoction from the incredible Pixar team,” Movieguide®’s +2, four-star review reads. “A near great movie, it does have some issues. Some of the cartoon violence skews toward older children and teenagers, and some moral points are ignored by the dramatic action. That said, the movie has a brilliant light Christian worldview with strong moral elements and very strong sentiments favoring the pursuit of happiness.”

While a RATATOUILLE 2 is a hard no, Bird thinks the INCREDIBLES franchise has a bright future, saying, “Now, THE INCREDIBLES — I could see another INCREDIBLES film.”

He isn’t directing the third installment, but Bird will pen the script with Peter Sohn (ELEMENTAL, THE GOOD DINOSAUR) directing. While plot and casting details are unknown, it is slated for a June 16, 2028 release date. Disney will also release LILO & STITCH 2 on May 26 that year.

While Hollywood feasts on sequels, Bird’s firm stance on RATATOUILLE reminds us that some stories are best served as a single, perfect dish.
