Excited about THE PRINCESS DIARIES 3? So is Meg Cabot, the author of the series the hit movies are based on.
“I have a problem keeping my mouth shut,” the author joked to The Hollywood Reporter. “I read a script, and it was amazing. I told them not to send anymore, because I love it so much. They don’t like it when you tell people what’s gonna happen yet. So I was like, ‘Better not send me any more scripts!’”
Cabot, who kicked off the 12-book series over 25 years ago, revealed that PRINCESS DIARIES 3 “has been in discussions for a really long time,” with many scripts floating around.
“I think this one that I most recently read is my favorite. Fingers crossed that’s the one they’re going to use, but it’s a really fun idea, and I’m 100 percent behind it,” she added.

She isn’t the only one who’s hopeful PRINCESS DIARIES 3 will be getting off the ground soon. Producer Debra Martin Chase recently told PEOPLE, “We are more than hopeful. We are moving in that direction. We’ve done a lot of groundwork.”
“We had hoped to be shooting this year. So, it’s coming,” Chase continued. “We’re intent upon making it happen. And we’re excited that the people are excited. Every time something happens and we get the thing, it’s like, ‘Yay, okay, keep going!’”
Adele Lim, the movie’s director, told Variety, “We just want to make the story right because it is a franchise that is so beloved by so many people.”
She noted that many of the fans of the 2001 movie are adults and mothers now and hopes to make a movie that shows that growth for main character, Princess Mia Thermopolis.
“There are so many movies that are wish fullfilment for princesses,” Lim explained. “We don’t have a lot of wish fulfilment movies for queens. That’s what we are setting out to do here, to show a woman in her full power.”
She continued, “If you were a fan of the original first two movies, I think you can look forward to a lot of fun [character] returns,” adding, “We’re going to be able to shoot in Europe and really show the audience Genovia in its full glory.”
There is no official release date yet for THE PRINCESS DIARIES 3, but fans of the series are hopeful production will begin soon.
