I LOVE YOU, MAN

I LOVE YOU, MAN is a raunchy comedy about male bonding and friendship. It contains abundant foul language and extremely frank discussion about sex.

Paul Rudd stars as Peter, a real estate salesman trying to sell Lou Ferrigno’s house so he can build his dream project of an upscale yuppie neighborhood overlooking downtown Los Angeles. He proposes to his girlfriend, Zooey, on the empty lots for his project.

Peter overhears Zooey telling her friends how strange it is that Peter has no real men friends. He also doesn’t have a Best Man for their wedding. With help from his homosexual brother, Peter starts going out on some “man dates.” He also tries to become poker buddies with the poker gang of the husband of one of Zooey’s girlfriends. None of these attempts works until Peter meets Sydney, a strange but likeable guy who cruises open houses looking for divorced women.

Peter and Sydney hit it off well enough, but Peter doesn’t know how to relax with men friends. And, he is embarrassed at first when Sydney wants to speak frankly about women, including Peter’s sexual relationship with Zooey.

Trouble comes when Zooey doesn’t hit it off right away when she meets Sydney. She begins to feel like a third wheel whenever Peter and Sydney get together. This creates tension with Peter, who begins to wonder whether Zooey is the only girl for him. He also questions his friendship with Sydney, who’s a bit of a loose cannon. Of course, this being a comedy, everything turns out okay in the end.

The set-up for this movie is fairly clever and unique. Paul Rudd and Jason Segel as Peter and Sydney are often hilarious together. Regrettably, however, the movie’s dialogue is fill with strong obscenities and extremely frank, very crude talk about sex. There are also strong homosexual references. Ultimately, all the characters in this comedy are lost souls in an antinomian neo-pagan world. They have the vestiges of Christian and biblical morality and forgiveness, but few of the high standards and none of the truth.

In that light, it is interesting to note that, at one point, Sydney tells Peter that people are animals, so he shouldn’t be embarrassed about his sexual behavior, including talking so frankly about it. This Darwinistic notion that people are just highly evolved “animals” shows the cultural and moral dangers of much evolution theory. The Darwinists and Neo-Darwinists promote a naturalistic, anti-religion ideology of naturalistic, amoral pseudo-science that fails to adequately explain the physical world, including our human capabilities. Thus, their phony “scientific” theories contribute to the immoral, anti-Christian and ultimately anti-intellectual paganization of modern culture. Because of such bad thinking, there are antinomian movies like I LOVE YOU, MAN, where traditional standards of human dignity and human worth are often violated. The evolution worldview is false as well as corrupt.
