Sadie Robertson Huff shared her thoughts about attending award shows after Forrest Frank announced a personal conviction to not attend these events in the future.
“For Christians, it’s hard to know where the line in the sand is between being in the world and not of the world. And as a Christian artist, you know, I dress kind of like the world. I kind of look like the world. My music can kind of sound like the world. So, where’s the line in the sand drawn? And I’m convicted…personally that a line that I can draw is that I will not receive a trophy for something that is from Jesus and for Jesus,” Frank said on Oct. 7. “I feel a conviction to go even a step further and say, I don’t know if I even want to step on the stage. I don’t know if I even want to step in the room. And so, I have decided to take a stance of non-participation.”

His decision has since sparked a debate among Christians surrounding the topic and if it is okay for people of the faith to attend events like the Dove Awards or the Grammys. As someone who has been a Christian in the entertainment industry for over a decade, Huff shared her view on this topic.
“I strongly believe in personal convictions and following any spirit checks you have. There are several things I feel personally convicted of, and I don’t expect another brother or sister to feel the same level of conviction around. I honor that Forrest Frank feels personally convicted of not accepting or attending award shows to keep his heart pure in what he does,” Huff wrote on Instagram. “But just because he feels that personal conviction does not mean that the Dove Awards or anyone who goes to them or chooses to accept an award is doing anything wrong.”
She went on to explain that Christian award shows offer an example of how all award shows should be run – giving glory and honor to God while also recognizing excellence in those doing His good work on earth. Furthermore, these shows give platforms to Christians and allow them to reach more people with the work they are producing, further spreading the Gospel.
Should Christians accept awards for their art?
This is the reason Movieguide® hosts its annual Movieguide® Awards Gala event: to recognize the Christians in Hollywood who are doing exceptional work to redeem the industry. Furthermore, the event encourages the Christians in the industry and allows them to connect with other Christians, helping them find connections and support in an often hostile industry.
“It’s always about the message,” Terry Crews said in 2023 when he hosted the Movieguide® Awards. “Because all art has a message. Everything that you would consider an artwork has a message to give. It’s very, very important to me that my message be the truth. You know what I mean? One thing I love about [the Movieguide® Awards] is it’s not just all family entertainment, it’s also about movies that are for mature audiences only. But, it’s really about telling the truth, the true message. The thing I hate is [when] you look at a script and say ‘It’s not real. This is not true.’ Or, either the bad guy wins in the end. That isn’t real.”
Thus, award shows are not a thing to be demonized or shunned. Instead, those watching or attending them should recognize the good in them, while also realizing they can corrupt the soul if conducted in the wrong way.
