Top NFL rookie Travis Hunter just made a big step in his faith, getting baptized hours before a big game.

“Couldn’t find my keys this morning and was late for church, only to come upon Jacksonville Jaguars Travis Hunter getting baptized!” a congregant at the church where Hunter was baptized posted on Instagram. “He asked to come get baptized before today’s game. Thank you Jesus for touching this young man’s life!”

Hunter shared a video of the baptism on his Instagram page, as well. Fans and friends quickly filled the comment section with congratulations.

“Love you!!” One person wrote. “This right here is what winning at what matters most looks like.”

Another commented, “Congratulations Travis…To God be the glory!!”

He also spoke about the decision to be baptized with ESPN, sharing, “It’s Sunday. It’s God’s day. I’ve been planning to go get baptized for a minute. I changed my life over to become a better man.”

Hunter added, “It means a lot. I’m becoming a better man and leaving my old self and starting a new chapter.”

Hunter has previously shared his faith. In his acceptance speech for the Heisman Trophy, he said, “First of all, I want to say I thank God. I never thought I would be in this position. Your belief takes you a long way.”

He has also posted scripture on his Instagram page. A recent post reads, “For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Matthew 7:8 NIV.”

Hunter was previously coached by Deion Sanders at Jackson State and the University of Colorado. Sanders has also been outspoken about his faith and has even come under fire for praying with his team.

“I’m not going to be ashamed of the gospel. That’s what my Bible tells me,” he said of the complaints. “And I’m going to proclaim my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ wherever I want to. Ain’t nobody gonna tell me not to give love and respect to my Lord and Savior that has blessed me, has pulled me up from suicidal thoughts, and a multiplicity of things that you don’t know.”

Sanders recently battled and overcame cancer, telling reporters at a press conference, “I’m God’s guy. I really am. I’m allowed to go through these trials and tribulations so that I could touch and reach and bless people with my words, with the energy, with that thing that God gave me.”

Hunter’s decision to get baptized before his big game is an indicator of the strength of his faith, as well as his decision to dedicate his life to Christ.
