Could Loretta Lynn’s Granddaughter Win This Season of AMERICAN IDOL?
By Movieguide® Contributor
Emmy Russell, Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter, held on in the most recent episode of AMERICAN IDOL, landing her in the top five and continuing her run for the title.
Last weekend’s episode had the competitors belting out some of Adele’s most iconic hits. Russell, however, began her performance with a rendition of Walk The Moon’s “Shut Up And Dance.” The song, however, didn’t quite go as planned due to the intense nerves she felt while taking the stage.
“Were you going to get up and walk around? What happened,” Katy Perry asked Russell after her performance.
“I just kind of changed my mind,” Russell responded with a smirk. “My nerves got nervous.
“You were the most confident I’ve seen you even if it was from a profile,” Perry added. “It was the most confident and best sounding you’ve ever sounded. Chill bumps everywhere.”
Perry wasn’t the only judge who thought Russell had more confidence than ever. The other judges thought this was Russell’s best performance yet because she had the confidence to step into her own sound.
“If you had any nerves, we couldn’t see it,” Lionel Richie said. “Your confidence is on point. You’re stepping into that lane we call superstar.”
“A little sultry tonight. A little sassy,” Richie added. “What I’m saying is, you are standing in your light. That’s very, very cool. Welcome aboard.”
Even with these raving comments from the judges, Russell’s spot in the top five was not guaranteed. With only seven contestants left, it would take a truly special performance to stay in the competition.
Russell’s complete set, which included Adele’s “Water Under the Bridge” and Meghan Trainor’s new single “To The Moon,” was just enough to push her through to the next round as the last name to make it. She beat out Mckenna Breinholt and Julia Gagnon to advance to next week’s episode.
Good luck to Russell as she continues her run on this season of AMERICAN IDOL.

AMERICAN IDOL competitor and country star Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter, Emmy Russell, made it into the top 14 contestants on April 16 after she delivered an authentic original song.
“I was back there and I was just thinking, ‘So many good people have gone home,’” she said about the moment before she was told she made the top 14, “and so I was like, ‘Well, if that person went home, and I surely might go home.’”
“So I was preparing for the no, but I knew that I’d walk away with a song that I believed in and felt like me, so I was really peaceful,” the 25-year-old told PEOPLE. “That’s not normally how I feel, but I felt peaceful.”
Russell sang “Skinny,” her original audition song, barefoot on the stage.
