How Josh Baldwin’s ‘Prince of Peace’ Reminds Him ‘Who the Lord Is’

Singer-songwriter and worship leader Josh Baldwin is sharing the story behind his song “Prince of Peace.”

“[It] came out of just a kind of crazy, turbulent, stressful season in my family — in our lives,” he said during an episode of “The Walk” podcast.

Baldwin explained that his wife had struggled off and on with anxiety throughout their relationship but had everything under control.

“Out of nowhere, she got hit with a lot of anxiety and panic attacks and falling into depression…I needed to be home,” he said. “We were just like, ‘We’ve got to go hard after this and seek the Lord and find His peace.’”

Baldwin canceled work trips to stay home while he and his wife navigated this time but decided not to cancel a writers’ session he had scheduled with someone flying in from Australia.

“I didn’t want to leave my wife, and I didn’t feel super creative in that moment, either,” he said, but, “I felt the Lord nudging me to do it.”

During the session, the other writers could tell Baldwin was preoccupied. He shared what he and his wife were dealing with, which led the others to share their own experiences. “Prince of Peace” came out of their conversation.

“I just felt like it needed to be so authentic to the way we were feeling in that moment…just crying out to the Lord for His peace,” he shared.

Baldwin said he never intended for the song to be heard by anyone but him and his wife, but when it came time to make his live album, “Made For More,” “I knew that I wanted this song to be on it.”

“It’s been such a sweet reminder of who the Lord is in every season — He’s this wonderful friend, He’s a father, He’s a savior, my defender, my help, but also the Prince of Peace,” Baldwin concluded.

The artist spoke further about the song in an interview with The Christian Post.

“I’m kind of shocked at how many people have reached out,” Baldwin said. “It’s the hidden song on the album, not the title track or the one you’d expect to hear in church. Yet, people have told us how much peace it has brought them and how they finally feel like there’s a song that connects with their experience…it’s giving people hope.”

Speaking about “Made For More,” Baldwin called the album “such an important project.”

“What I love most about it is that all of these songs came out of different seasons my family and I have been and are still walking through — calling on the Lord to be our help and our Prince of Peace through all of the ups and downs of life,” he said. “These songs are anthems that I’ve been singing over myself and my family, reminding myself who the Lord is in me and who He’s called me to be. The heart of this album, and my heart for every person who listens, is that they would be reminded that they’ve been redeemed and called by name.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Baldwin’s music:

Singer-songwriter and worship leader Josh Baldwin recently spoke about his writing process, as well as how young people in the church are inspiring him.

“It’s really good when songs are written out of that place of healing, out of like, ‘This is what the Lord’s done for me,’” Baldwin told Worship Leader Magazine.

He added, “Just because I write a song doesn’t mean it’s meant for everyone and to be sent out to the world. Sometimes, it’s just a way of healing and just dealing with it with the Lord.”

“Write out of healing and not out of hurt,” Baldwin emphasized.
