Phil Wickham didn’t acting on his radar, but when the opportunity to play David in the new Angel Studios animation DAVID popped up, he decided to give it a shot.

He was excited to try for the part, but without a background in theater, he was unsure if he would land the role.

“I have no idea if I have what it takes to do this. And but also, I’m not offendable. So, if I do it for a minute, they’re like, gosh, dude, you are not the guy. I’d be fine with that,” he admitted in an interview with CCM Magazine.

After several attempts to pinpoint what David was supposed to sound like, Wickham received the news that he got the part.

“I got a call saying, ‘Hey, you got the part.’ Like, ‘We, everybody really really loves what you brought, not just in the acting, but in the spirit.’ And we’re good to go. And so, ever since then, we’ve been we’ve been working on it,” the Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum worship artist said.

The animated movie recounts David’s life story.

“From the songs of his mother’s heart to the whispers of a faithful God, David’s story begins in quiet devotion. When the giant Goliath rises to terrorize a nation, a young shepherd armed with only a sling, a few stones, and unshakable faith steps forward. Pursued by power and driven by purpose, his journey tests the limits of loyalty, love, and courage — culminating in a battle not just for a crown, but for the soul of a kingdom,” Angel Studios’ synopsis reads.

Wickham plays adult David in the movie — a role he doesn’t take lightly due to his love for the biblical character.

“I am so proud to be a small part of a huge amount of people working on a movie and to carry the voice of David in this movie,” he said. “[It] is an absolute honor.”

He continued, “Young David is played by a very talented actor named Brandon Engman and…you fall in love with the character, so I’m just riding in on his coattails. He kills it, and then I just…do the second half.”

Wickham expressed a appreciation for all who worked so hard to make the movie happened, saying, “What really stood out to me — and it kind of it made me emotional just by the end of it — you really get a sense by the end of it how much the people who wrote this movie the people who were the wind in the sails really loved truly loved the source material.”

He continued, “People wanted to tell the story…it’s called DAVID and it’s David’s story, but it really is God’s story. People that said yes to Him even in their fears, even in their doubts, even in their humanity.”

DAVID releases in theaters Dec. 18.
