When Michael Landon played Pa, AKA Charles Ingalls, on LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, he was all smiles. But behind the scenes, he dealt with personal issues.
“This show was so personal for him. LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, the show was personal for him,” said Allison Arngrim, who played Nellie. “There’s endless episodes and endless moments where Michael is like, as I said, it was it was therapy.”
Landon also produced the show and directed some episodes. He faced many childhood and personal issues while working on the show.
“And he was just working them all out in front of all of America,” Arngrim added. “And it was brilliant. And it worked.”
Landon was very open about his struggles, especially those that concerned his childhood.
She explained, “He was looking for the kind of real family and real love and connection that the show exemplified.”

She believes he was one of the funniest people she’s ever known.
“I mean, it’s one of the best ways to describe him. Remember, he’s writing the show, he’s producing the show and he’s directing the show and he’s this ball of energy and just a workaholic cuckoo, but so funny,” Arngrim told PEOPLE. “Michael was a creative tornado. It was absolutely amazing to watch him work and then he was an absolute laugh riot and couldn’t resist a practical joke.”
Dean Butler, who played Almanzo Wilder, admired Landon, though he admits he was not a perfect person.
He said, “He was a very full, richly diverse human being, but he understood what his job was and that was to create something that multiple generations of people could experience together. Something that would be foundational in terms of its goodness with people, values and morals — that would be crystal clear. There was very little nuance and ambiguity in what he was doing.”
Linwood Boomer, who created MALCOM IN THE MIDDLE and starred as Adam Kendall in LITTLE HOUSE, said he learned how to be a good director/writer/producer from Landon, especially when it came to working with children.
“I think that has always been like a thing that I carry because I saw Michael was really good about that with the kids,” Boomer said. “And the hours were set up so that the kids could be kids. And he ran the show, he had it organized enough that those situations where we’re not going to get a shot with the kid because the kid says he has to go home, and we, you know, wasted time on this other thing, and now we’re going to ask the kid to, you know, waive his rights. That never happened.”
He never tried to bend the rules or have children work more to meet the production schedule.
Netflix’s reboot of the classic series will come out with an all-new cast on July 9.
