Why UNSUNG HERO Will Be a ‘Love Letter to Motherhood’

A new behind-the-scenes look at for King + Country’s UNSUNG HERO reveals why this movie will be one of the year’s best stories.
“Having heard the music, having watched the scenes, I think people are going to take away hope from this film,” said Candace Cameron Bure, who plays Kay Albright. “There’s redemption. There’s hope. There’s love. Go see UNSUNG HERO because it will just encourage you.”
UNSUNG HERO tells the story of Joel and Luke Smallbone’s family growing up. Their father, David, moves his family from Australia to America after his music company crumbles. While David struggles to provide for his family, their mother, Helen, keeps the family strong and is the force that allows them to endure hard times.
“The film is a love letter to motherhood and mothers,” said co-director Richard L. Ramsey. “I really love the way the film explores that different people in your lives saw needs and acted and that’s a miracle in its own way.”
“Because mom and dad posed it to us as an adventure, it was that and they didn’t seem scared, so we weren’t scared,” explained Rebecca St. James.
“Migrating around the world and taking leaps of faith and taking risks fighting for each other instead of against each other in these really dire and desperate moments,” added Joel Smallbone. “[The movie] hopefully just gives on small example of what it looks like to rise above together.”
The movie is also perfect for an audience of any age because it has characters anybody can connect with.
“If you’re an 18-year-old girl, Rebecca, my sister, becomes sort of your unsung hero. And if you’re a mom and a wife, then my mom, Helen, is just such a great figure in real life and in the picture. And if you’re a husband or a father, and you’re trying to navigate your way through…wanting to protect and wanting to lift up your wife and your family, then you relate to David’s character,” Joel told Movieguide®.
“It’s stellar, and it truly is all about family, and it’s going through all the hard times, sticking together, coming out through it,” Bure told Andy Erwin. “But it’s really about seeing the journey and what families can go through but also accomplish together and especially within marriage when you’re always refining one another, husband and wife. That’s what marriage is all about.”
UNSUNG HERO comes to theaters starting April 26.
Joel Smallbone recently appeared in JOURNEY TO BETHLEHEM, which won Movieguide®’s Epiphany Prize®.
