What You Need To Know:

COCO CHANEL AND IGOR STRAVINSKY is the fictionalized tale of the alleged adulterous love affair between famed French clothing designer, Coco Chanel, and the Russian composer, Igor Stravinsky. After the Russian Revolution, Igor lives in exile in Paris with his family. While there, Igor meets Coco, a successful designer and huge fan of Igor’s work. She offers her countryside villa as a place for Igor to work on his masterpiece, and he moves his family to the villa. Coco comes to visit, and the attraction between her and Igor is palpable. After struggling with temptation, the two consumate their adulterous affair.

COCO CHANEL AND IGOR STRAVINSKY is a very methodical, character-driven movie. The leads give fine performances, and the musical score is wonderful. Tragically, the movie has an overall theme of adultery, a mixed pagan worldview, and strong sexuality and nudity. It also has several scenes of depicted drunkenness and a lot of cigarette smoking. On a positive note, Igor’s wife is unfailing in her love for Igor, and she never loses her faith, even praying the Lord’s Prayer. These positive elements, however, are eclipsed by the movie’s adulterous theme and sensuality.

More Detail:

COCO CHANEL AND IGOR STRAVINSKY, based on the book by Chris Greenhalgh, is a fictionalized, imagined tale of the torrid, adulterous alleged love affair between famed French clothing and perfume designer, Coco Chanel, and the controversial Russian musical composer of “The Rite of Spring,” Igor Stravinsky.

In Paris in 1913, Coco attends the premiere of Igor’s latest symphony. Coco is mesmerized by the musical work, but the rest of the Paris crowd becomes enraged at the piece, decrying its modern music and nearly rioting.

Seven years later after the Russian Revolution, Igor is living in exile in Paris with his children and his wife, who is dying of consumption. While in exile, Igor is looking for a place to rework his musical symphony.

Now a successful clothing designer, Coco meets Igor at a party. She offers her countryside villa as a place for Igor to work on his masterpiece. He humbly accepts and moves his family up to Coco’s villa. On the weekends, she comes up and stays at the villa with the family, and with Igor. The forbidden attraction between the two is palpable. After struggling with temptation, Igor eventually carries out the adulterous affair.

COCO CHANEL AND IGOR STRAVINSKY is a very methodical, character-driven movie. The two leads give fine performances and the musical score, mirrored from Stravinsky’s actual compositions, is amazing. The direction is precise and solid.

The movie’s adulterous theme, which is pursuing one’s passion whatever the personal cost, is clear and concise, yet altogether tragic. Igor loses his children and his wife over his obsession with Coco and finishing his masterpiece. Eventually, he and Coco both end up alone because of their all-consuming personal drive and passion.

The movie does not contain much foul language or violence. However, it has a mostly mixed pagan worldview with strong sexuality and nudity. It also has several scenes of depicted drunkenness and a lot of cigarette smoking. On a positive note, Igor’s wife is unfailing in her love for Igor, even in the face of his unfaithfulness. Also, she never loses her faith and even prays the Lord’s Prayer. These positive elements, however, are eclipsed by the movie’s adulterous theme, sexuality and nudity.
