Comedian Leanne Morgan’s new sitcom LEANNE’s July 31 release date is quickly approaching, marking the star’s return to Netflix following her I’M EVERY WOMAN comedy special.
“This is something I’ve dreamed of since I was a little girl,” she told Tudum of the show. “Filming in front of a live audience felt like home, and while learning a new medium was definitely a challenge, it was one I absolutely loved.”
The sitcom will simply be called LEANNE and tells the story of a woman whose husband leaves her for another woman after 33 years of marriage. “Starting over when you’re a grandmother and in menopause isn’t exactly what she had in mind, but with the help of her family, she will face this new chapter with grace, dignity, and Jell-O salad,” a synopsis on Tudum reads.
Morgan told that outlet, “[Her character] Leanne uses humor to cope. Sometimes you just have to laugh to keep from crying. She leans on her support system — her family, close friends, and church community — to get through it.”
Morgan previously opened up to Variety about how the opportunity to do the sitcom validated her after years of hoping to do something similar.
“When Chuck Lorre flew to Knoxville and sat on my back porch and held my grandbaby and asked me if I would do a television show with him, the whole thing was crazy,” she explained. “My husband sits and watches BIG BANG THEORY every night, all night long. Honey, that’s all he does. That’s his show…I really felt validated after 25 years of doing stand-up and getting a lot of nos, a lot of ‘You’re not edgy enough,’ ‘You’re too plain.’”
But today, she’s one of the top comedians.
“On the stand-up side, we work with best-in-class comedians from all over that reach very different audiences,” Tracey Pakosta, comedy head of Netflix, said. “And as we all know from back in the day when these types of shows were more popular and resonated, when you find somebody that has a very specific authentic voice, it makes sense to lean in. And Leanne is absolutely one of those talents.”
Morgan continues to do stand-up comedy, too. Currently she is on her “Just Getting Started” tour, which lasts throughout October.
