STAR WARS: THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU brings the popular TV series onto the big screen, with Mando and his adopted son, Grogu, rounding up Imperial warlords for the New Republic and finding themselves helping the late Jabba the Hutt’s young heir, Rotta, trying to free himself from his father’s criminal kingdom, including his two evil uncles, who want to ensure that the young heir never succeeds. MANDALORIAN AND GROGU is action-packed and has some funny, heartwarming moments, with no foul language and strong positive themes about fighting tyranny and evil, doing the right thing, helping the young find their way, and risking your life to rescue others in danger, but it does have lots of strong action violence, including many fights against scary monsters, and some scenes where Grogu uses mystical Force magic, so MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children.
The movie opens with Mando and Grogu fighting an Imperial warlord’s minions on an ice planet in the Outer Rim of the Galaxy. The warlord is trying to restore the evil Galactic Empire and is oppressing local planet leaders when Mando and Grogu appear. A big fight ensues.
Later, after the fight, the New Republic leader who hired Mando and Grogu, Colonel Ward, complains to Mando that he didn’t try to bring back the warlord alive. It’s hard to find more Imperial sympathizers if the New Republic doesn’t have anyone to interrogate, she chastises. We’ll go after anyone you want, Mando replies.
As Mando continues to train up his adoptive son, Grogu, in the way he should go, the Colonel gives them another assignment. The Republic is looking for a mysterious Imperial warlord that no one knows his face. However, it’s gotten an offer by the brothers of the late Jabba the Hutt, who now run Jabba’s criminal enterprise. They’ll help Mando and Grogu track down the warlord if they rescue their nephew, Rotta, Jabba’s son, who’s been kidnapped by a criminal rival.
Mando and Grogu leave to carry out the assignment. However, they learn some secrets about the kidnapping that change the nature of their assignment.
THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU is action-packed and has some funny, heartwarming moments, but some of the multiple fights with scary monsters, not just villains, get a little monotomous. One sequence, however, where Grogu must fend for himself, adds some nice flavor to the story.
THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU has a strong morally uplifting, patriotic worldview about maintaining freedom and liberty. The two heroes are defending the New Republic against imperial remnants trying to restore the evil Empire. They also end up battling two evil criminals and helping their nephew who’s trying to escape his family’s criminal traditions and live a good life. The scenes between the nephew, Mando and Grogu are endearing. The nephew projects an admirable character to emulate. The movie is also about the developing father-son relationship between Mando and Grogu. At one point, Mando notes that parents protecting their children and, later, children protecting their parents is “The Way.” Finally, the third act overtly promotes the old military adage “Leave no one behind.” By the end of the movie, Mando and Grogu have become part of something bigger than themselves.
Happily, THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU has no foul language, but it does have lots of strong and light action violence, including many fights against scary monsters. The movie also has some scenes where Grogu uses mystical Force magic. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children, including young teenagers.
