Brandon Lake and Nick Jonas recently sat down to discuss their new faith-filled song, “The Author.”
“I’ve literally said that line to myself, because I’m like, ‘I don’t know if I can do this, but who am I to question the pen in the hand of the author? He asked me to do it, He called me to do it, so…’” Lake said in an Instagram video.

The singer-songwriter referred to “The Author”’s chorus, where Lake and Jonas sing, “Who am I to question the pen in the hands of the Author?”
Jonas shared his favorite line from the song, as well — “I’ve seen panic turn to power, felt Your peace in my darkest hour // What grace is this? Called me by name again and again and again and again.”
“[It’s] one of my favorite things I’ve ever been a part of writing, that little piece of music, because I think it rings true for all of us,” he explained. “Your point — you know, people see us on the stage, or they see us out here, you know, just doing what we’re doing and living our lives, and oftentimes, I think they can overlook the fact that we’re going through the same day-to-day things that we’re all going through: tests of confidence, and ‘am I being a good father today?’ Am I being a great husband? Am I showing up for my friends?’”
Jonas continued, “When life throws these curveballs at you, how you respond is a direct reflection of your real connection with your God and with your faith…I think that it’s been really gratifying to see…people’s reactions across my fanbase and yours.”
In an interview with K-LOVE, Jonas spoke about how the collaboration came to be, sharing, “We had some mutual friends…and I got a text about a songwriting camp. We were in the middle of our tour…but I had a two or three day stretch where I had the window to do it. So I showed up and we got right into it-and I felt a real connection right away.”
Lake also spoke about the track, explaining, “I think people assume we don’t ask the same questions… but we absolutely do. I’m getting up on that platform really dependent and asking, ‘Who am I?’ But also… who am I to question the pen in the hand of the Author?”
He continued, “If He’s called us…why would we doubt? Even if we fail, don’t we trust Him enough to turn that into something beautiful?”
