THE LORD OF THE RINGS’ infamous director Peter Jackson has let Andy Serkis take over for the upcoming movie from the franchise, THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM.

“The film is very much an internal story about Gollum’s psychology and his sort of addiction. It’s a very personal story to Gollum the character. And so I thought, well, Andy knows this guy better than anybody,” Jackson said.

Serkis played Gollum in the other movies. He will star in and direct THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM while Jackson produces. Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo and Lee Pace as Thranduil. Jamie Dornan will take over Viggo Mortensen’s former role as Aragorn. Kate Winslet and Leo Woodall will play new characters Marigol and Halvard, respectively, Entertainment Weekly said.

“I didn’t really think much about the idea of me doing it at all,” Jackson said. “I thought the most exciting version of this movie is going to be if Andy Serkis makes it, because he’s going to put a Gollum psychology on screen that you cannot imagine.”

Serkis has experience as a director for ANIMAL FARM and VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE.

“I mean, I’m there to help when I can help,” Jackson said. “If I can be of assistance at certain times and answer questions, I’m there. But I don’t interfere.”

Jackson recently gave an update on HUNT FOR GOLLUM: “We’ve got a lot of the old team back again, familiar faces and some new faces. But Andy’s doing a terrific job, it’s looking amazing. The script is coming together really well, and I think it’s going to be a really good film.”

The movie is adapted by Fran Walsh, Phillippa Boyens, Arty Papageorgiou and Phoebe Gittins. It will come out on Dec. 17, 2027.

Boyens said THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM is “quite an intense story, which falls after the birthday party of Bilbo and before the Mines of Moria.”

One of Jackson’s next projects as a director will be for a new TINTIN movie.

Jackson produced the 2011 movie, THE ADVENTURES OF TIN, and regrets not making a sequel sooner.

Jackson said, “Steven’s gracious enough not to sort of push me, but I know that I want to make it right. So I’ve been working with Fran [Walsh] on another TINTIN script. I was writing it in the hotel room here just a couple of days ago.”

There is no word of a release date for the upcoming TINTIN movie yet.
