Clean Comedian Leanne Morgan Calls Career Success ‘A Blessing From Heaven’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Comedian Leanne Morgan has had the biggest year of her career, with a tour, a Netflix special, an upcoming movie role and a book under her belt.

“I got started [in stand-up comedy] when my baby child was 18 months old and she’s 25, so I’ve been doing comedy for a long time…I had a good career,” Morgan explained. “It was fine. Nobody really knew who I was, but I was out there doing it.”

Her career “boomed in 2019” after clips of her performing went viral online. The internet popularity led to her first tour and a Netflix special.

“I thought, ‘They’re never going to have an old grandmama on Netflix,’ and honey, they have!” Morgan laughed. “It has been wonderful. The reception of it has been so sweet and precious. It’s been crazy and wonderful, and I could just pinch myself every day.”

Fans of Morgan’s comedy love her clean humor and her commitment to avoiding political topics.

“I understand how people want to do that and do comedy that way. But I have just never written that way or ever thought that way,” Morgan explained. “Plus, I thought, nobody cares what I think. I want it to be fun. I don’t want anybody to feel uncomfortable….I don’t write that way.”

Morgan also talked about some of the exciting projects she has coming, including a book about her life.

“It’s not a memoir,” the comedian emphasized. “I wanted to tell every horrible thing I ever did in the ’80s, and my literary agent said, ‘Honey, you’re not Joan Crawford yet.’ So, it is funny essays of my life to kind of introduce me to the world.”

She is also appearing in the upcoming movie YOU’RE CORDIALLY INVITED alongside Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell.

Deadline’s synopsis reads, “In the pic, a woman (Witherspoon) who is planning her sister’s (Meredith Hagner) perfect wedding and the father (Ferrell) of a young bride-to-be (Geraldine Viswanathan) discover that they are double-booked for their destination wedding at a remote resort on an island off the Georgia coast. When both parties decide to share the small venue, chaos ensues and disaster awaits.”

“I play [Witherspoon’s] big sister, and I have had a ball,” Morgan gushed. “I’m in love with both of them. They have been precious to me and they know that I don’t know what I’m doing and they have lifted me up and encouraged me. It has been so much fun. Every day, we laugh until we’re weak, and it is just a blessing from heaven.”
