BOSTON BLUE star Gloria Reuben revealed what really drew her to the role of Mae Silver in the CBS drama series.
“First of all, it always comes down to the writing and, of course, the cast, and both were spot on,” the actress told Women’s World. “When I was asked to take a look at the pilot episode, I was completely drawn in and enthusiastic and passionate, not just about the story, but also about this family.”
“The integration of religion and race and professions, even though it’s all under the umbrella of the law,” Reuben added of what drew her to the part. “Needless to say, the role being the district attorney of Suffolk County in Massachusetts, I was, like, ‘I’m in, I love it.’ So all of those things combined definitely made it an easy yes to accept the role.”
Mae Silver shares some similarities to BLUE BLOODS Erin Reagan, but their differences are pretty clear.

“Mae Silver feels very different in fundamental ways. She’s the mother of three adult children and her husband was murdered the year prior. She is kind of the matriarch of the family,” Reuban explained. “So, I’d say my character would be the female version of Tom Selleck, or Frank Reagan. She’s the head of the table. That’s what I was more leaning towards. Of course, Ernie Hudson plays my father, but in the world of the law around that dining room table, it’s certainly Mae Silver who sits at the head of that story.”
BOSTON BLUE follows BLUE BLOODS’ Danny Reagan after he “joins Boston PD from NYPD and partners with Detective Lena Silver, the oldest daughter of a notable Boston law enforcement family.”
There are other similarities to BLUE BLOODS, aside from Reuben’s character.
“At the same time, there is the parallel of this being a multi-generational story and the fundamentals of what a family goes through, personally, morally, professionally, and how it comes down to sitting around the table and breaking bread together,” she continued. “Literally, too, as the Silver family celebrates Shabbat, so we literally break bread together. Sitting down with family and having the trust, openness and the love and respect to be able to talk about anything, that’s what we do on BOSTON BLUE. I’m really happy about that because you never know what’s going to happen, that’s for sure.”
The Silver family is always expanding, and in April they included Mae’s sister, Jill Peters, played by Holly Robinson Peete.
“I was so excited to spend some time at the Silvers family table on @bostonbluecbs…where, like a lot of families, not everything is said out loud…” Peete wrote on social media. “Jill has been carrying something for a long time — a truth she thought would protect the people she loves. But when it finally comes to light, it shifts everything…and forces her to face the impact of what’s been left unsaid.”
“Working alongside my friend, the brilliant Gloria Reuben @gloreuben and this AMAZING cast made this experience even more special! They are a truly iconic TV family,” Peete emphasized.
The BOSTON BLUE Season 1 finale aired last week, but Season 2 will debut this fall.
