Comedian Leanne Morgan Inks Netflix Sitcom Deal: ‘I’ve Dreamed of This’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Clean comedian Leanne Morgan is set to star in a new Netflix sitcom.
“Netflix says the untitled comedy revolves around Leanne, whose life ‘takes an unexpected turn when her husband of 33 years leaves her for another woman. Starting over when you’re a grandmother and in menopause isn’t exactly what she had in mind, but with the help of her family she will navigate this new chapter with grace, dignity and Jell-O salad,’” per The Hollywood Reporter.
Morgan is elated to begin this new journey.
“I’ve dreamed of this since childhood, and I can’t believe it has come true! When I started comedy 25 years ago, my goal was to be a part of a sitcom,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “It just goes to show you it’s never too late, and dreams do come true. I’m a grandmama from Tennessee, and now I have a TV show with Chuck Lorre and Netflix. What in the world!?”
Morgan co-created the series with Lorre (THE BIG BANG THEORY) and Susan McMartin, and all three serve as executive producers.
“If you’ve seen even 10 seconds of Leanne Morgan’s stand-up then you know what a unique comedic force she is,” Lorre said. “The theme of starting over is universal, and I cannot think of anyone better to combine heart and comedy than Leanne. I knew I had to work with her, and I’m so excited to bring this story to Netflix.”
Additionally, Netflix’s head of comedy, Tracey Pakosta, stated,
“We’re so thrilled to deepen our partnership with Leanne Morgan, whose singular and hilarious voice hooked viewers with her debut Netflix special last year, and to reunite with the legendary Chuck Lorre,” said Tracey Pakosta, Netflix’s head of comedy. “We’re looking forward to their collaboration on Netflix’s next big comedy series.”
The comedian has also signed on for two more Netflix stand-up specials following her 2023 I’M EVERY WOMAN special, Tudum reported.
Movieguide® previously reported on how Morgan got started in comedy:
Clean comedian Leanne Morgan eagerly opened up with PBS journalist Geoff Bennett about her unusual beginnings and how she worked her way up in the comedy world, even landing a Netflix special.
“I started selling jewelry. I’m going house to house at night. My husband took care of the baby. And then I was supposed to be talking about jewelry, and I would schlep this big jewelry case around. And I didn’t talk about jewelry. I talked about breast-feeding and hemorrhoids, and I developed a shtick, really, an act,” shared the Tennessee native.
She continued, “Women thought I was funny and started booking me about a year in advance.”
In her thick southern drawl, Morgan told Comedy Wham about the moment that cemented her future as a comedian. After telling some jokes, “One night a woman [at a jewelry party] peed on a couch, and I was like, ‘Okay, I’ve got it. I thought I had it, but I’ve got it.’”
“That was a God thing for me,” Morgan said.
