THE BOYS is one of Amazon Prime’s most popular — and most violent — shows. However, Kirk Cameron says there’s an important message about faith in the series.

“THE BOYS is not just another superhero show…it’s really an anti-superhero show,” he said during an episode of “The Kirk Cameron Show” podcast. “The superheroes in this world are fake, they’re manufactured.”

He continued, “People resonate with that…a lot of people feel that’s exactly what they see happening in real life…for example, corporations pretending to care while exploiting people for profit [or] politicians pretending to serve for the good of the people while building personal empires.”

Cameron explained that THE BOYS “taps into a growing suspicion in our culture that much of what we see is actually carefully manufactured,” which is something that “scripture actually warns us about.”

He cited 1 Samuel 16:7 — “But the Lord said unto Samuel, ‘Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart'” — adding, “The heart of the problem is the problem of the human heart…sin is an equal opportunity destroyer.”

“I think that THE BOYS is incredibly insightful. It’s echoing what the scriptures tell us about the evils of the human heart,” Cameron said. “But the showrunner, the creator and the scriptwriters have no real answer. They only have cynicism. They only have rage, only exposing the bad guys, only the endless cycle of trying to destroy the people that you believe are the enemy. And honestly, that’s where many of us are stuck in our culture right now in the real world….Jesus alone gives us the true answer.”

He concluded, “If the problem is inside [our hearts], then maybe my heart can be transformed, and maybe yours can, too.”

THE BOYS creator Eric Kripke has spoken about the role religion plays in the show, telling Polygon, “I think we take pains to make the point that religion, by and large, is a good thing. There are religious people on the show. It’s just when it’s weaponized, commodified, and used to tell politics of all things, it can be easily corrupted. I don’t know if people see this as well as I set it, but the show is pro-religion. It’s pro-belief.”

While THE BOYS certainly has its issues regarding violent and excessive content, Cameron’s comments show the series has something important to say about “the evils of the human heart.”
