Anne Hathaway opened up about how a personal health struggle she kept hidden throughout much her career changed her outlook on life.

“I was half blind for 10 years, [from] 30 to 40,” the actress revealed on the New York Times podcast “Popcast.”

“I had an early onset cataract really,” Hathaway explained, “and it impacted my vision so much that I was basically legally blind out of my left eye, and I wound up getting surgery.”

Assil Gaur Eye Institute explained that “Cataract formation is usually a slow process, which makes it hard to pinpoint the exact moment when cataracts develop. The process usually starts between the ages of 40 and 50, but it will take several years for the symptoms of cataracts to become a nuisance.”

The group added, “Generally speaking, cataracts that begin to develop before the age of 40 or that are causing blurry vision before the age of 60 are considered ‘early onset.’”

“I didn’t realize how bad it had gotten until I could finally see the full spectrum,” Hathaway said on the podcast. “I’ve calmed down since then. I didn’t realize it was actually taxing my nervous system.”

She went on to express her gratitude for vision and for modern medicine.

“I appreciate vision because I literally feel like every day I wake up, and I get to see the way that I do. It’s a miracle,” the PRINCESS DIARIES star said. “Like I actually am like, ‘Oh, two generations back that wouldn’t have been an option for someone like me.’ So like I actually do feel very connected to that that kind of a miracle.”

She’s certainly thankful for her eyesight, but Hathaway also expressed her gratitude for who she’s become as a person over the course of her career.

“To have worked so hard in my life to have…to have become a more positive person, to have become a healthier person, to have become a safer person, I was really happy that I could share that with people who were so formative and responsible for so many of the beautiful things that I have in my life,” she told Elle recently, referencing reprising her THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA role as Andy in the sequel.

Movieguide® gave THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2 a -2 content score, advising extreme caution due to a mixed worldview, some foul language and light references to pre-marital affairs.

We all know that life comes with struggles and challenges, but having a heart of gratitude can truly make all the difference.
