SULLIVAN’S CROSSING: Episode 4.1: “Curveball”

The first episode of season 4 of SULLIVAN’S CROSSING, streaming on Netflix, shifts the emotional landscape of the campground, plunging Maggie Sullivan and Cal Jones into the fallout of an unexpected return.

The episode opens with a striking, sensual dream sequence. Maggie wakes up in bed next to her ex, Liam, in an intimate scene with upper male nudity. Meanwhile, a new era begins at the Outpost, which operates without Sully. Cal steps up to manage the grounds, even dealing with unhappy campers by offering them free breakfast. When Cal enters the local diner, he walks straight into Liam, who charms the townspeople with grand stories of his global travels. Liam tries to extend that charm to Cal, and while jealousy mounts, the two men keep things outwardly cordial for the time being.

In search of a distraction, Maggie spends time with Lola, who struggles to find a venue for her local youth group’s field trip. Maggie generously offers to host the teenagers at the Outpost. While searching the office for supplies and the requested annulment papers, Maggie stumbles upon an old, heartfelt letter she wrote to Liam years prior. This discovery triggers bittersweet memories from a time when they felt genuinely happy, adding extra internal conflict to her current relationship with Cal.

The tension between Cal and Liam finally bubbles to the surface during the youth group’s visit. While chopping wood, Liam expresses surprise that Maggie walked away from her high-flying career as a neurosurgeon. Hoping to engage the teenagers, Liam suggests a wood-chopping contest that quickly escalates into a heated competition.

Later, during a hike in the woods, the teenagers get into a physical altercation, forcing Cal and Liam to step in together to break it up. Cal uses the moment to connect with one of the stressed-out teens, offering him a job at the Outpost after learning about his family’s severe financial struggles. However, the outdoor excursion takes a dangerous turn when Liam ventures off onto a side trail with some of the kids and injures his leg in an abandoned animal trap.

Meanwhile, in parallel storylines, Sydney deals with her own heartbreak. After confiding in Rob about her relationship woes, she shares an emotional final goodbye with Rafe, who leaves town to seek a fresh start elsewhere.

The climax of the episode delivers the definitive “curveball” promised by the title. Back at the Outpost, Maggie receives an urgent message from her divorce attorney. The lawyer reveals that the original paperwork contains not just messiness, but complete misfiling. Maggie and Liam remain married not only in Europe but everywhere. As the episode closes, the realization dawns that Liam won’t leave anytime soon, threatening to upend the fragile life Maggie and Cal have started to build together.
