GILMORE GIRLS just left its home of 12 years to move to HBO, and everyone is sad.

“Is it possible to be nostalgic for a time that you’ve never really experienced?” Variety’s Gen Zer Arushi Jacob asked. “Besides reaching the younger generation at the right time, GILMORE GIRLS has a cozy whimsicality that’s hard to not be drawn into. Maybe it’s the fall New England foliage Amy Sherman-Palladino’s show is so strongly associated with, or perhaps the warm, fast-paced banter between Rory and Lorelai that people spoof on TikTok to this day.”

It’s that comfort show that, no matter how many times someone’s already watched it, they always go back to it.

And it’s reached multiple generations. While the older ones might remember patiently waiting for a new episode to come out on TV or buying the DVDs, Gen Z strongly associates it with Netflix.

“The Consolas font subtitles and red progress marker are as synonymous with a GILMORE GIRLS viewing experience as a cup of coffee or the leaves changing colors. Or at least, they are for Gen Z,” Jacob said.

The revival series, GILMORE GIRLS: A YEAR IN THE LIFE, will also leave Netflix on Nov. 25.

Screen Rant’s Liz Hersey said of the double whammy: “This is heartbreaking for GILMORE GIRLS fans, particularly the younger generations who grew up with the series on Netflix, and for whom GILMORE GIRLS and the streaming platform are synonymous.”

Netflix announced GILMORE GIRLS’ departure on X on June 15, giving fans only two weeks to binge before it jumped platforms.

“It’s a show? It’s a lifestyle. It’s a religion,” Netflix wrote. “We are sorry to say that GILMORE GIRLS Seasons 1-7 will be leaving Netflix in the US on June 30. Raising a cup of coffee to every fan who visited Stars Hollow with us.”

Netflix GILMORE GIRLS fans shouldn’t lose all hope, though. A new platform hasn’t been chosen for A YEAR IN THE LIFE, and Hersey says there’s a chance that Netflix could still renew their deal.

Quite a few fans are still upset, though.

“And right before fall!!! Y’all are trippin!” one fan said. Another wrote, “well, where they leave, I will follow.”

Another person shared a screenshot of their cancelled membership confirmation. “Buying a cup a coffee* since I’m canceling my membership,” they wrote.

However, they can look forward to an upcoming documentary about the show called DRINK COFFEE, TALK FAST.

“The interviews that we’ve already conducted with the cast have been a delight,” co-director Meghna Balakumar said. “We’ve shot more than 100 hours of footage and have already unearthed stories, commentary, critiques and more. And we’re continuing to shoot more interviews in the coming months to present the most complete, full and truly new story of the show’s impact and legacy that is only possible at this historical moment.”

The crowdfunded doc is expected to come out sometime this summer.
