AMERICAN IDOL alum Danny Gokey has some tips to help your faith stay steady.

“Do you feel like your Christian life is like a yo-yo?” Gokey asked his followers on June 28. “You feel like you’re full of God one day…then you’re like where’s God’s love today?”

God never moves. He never leaves us. So if we feel distant from God, it’s because we’ve drifted away, Gokey concluded.

“The Bible talks about four things that you can do to stay full of God and not in a yo-yo Christian experience,” Gokey said in the video. “Now, we’re going to go to Romans 1:21, where I found the scripture verse — I actually heard a preacher talk about this…you can actually get cold to God, and it’s not his fault; it’s what you and I do.”

He quoted Romans 1:21, which talks about how believers who knew God did not thank Him or glorify Him, so they became distant from Him.

“If we do the opposite of these…things, we can actually stay on fire and stay full of God. So the four keys to staying full of God and staying on fire for Jesus is to constantly give Him praise and give Him thanks,” Gokey said. “It doesn’t’ matter what you’re going through.”

He emphasized gratitude, which requires humility. You have to actively go back in your memory and remember the good things that God has done.

Then there’s “vain imaginations,” Gokey continued. “If all you’re doing is thinking about the bad things in your life, how good sin is, how good temptation is, how you’re missing out, you’re going to become vain in your imagination.”

The last item Gokey mentioned is to guard your heart. The people mentioned in Romans became disillusioned with who God was, and became distant because they did not guard their hearts against worldly things.

“If we stay on fire and full for God,” he said, “we’re going to have to stay praising and stay thankful in all circumstances, guarding our hearts and our minds. This is how we stay full of God.”

Temptation will always be there, but if you do these things, you won’t give into it, and you’ll stay close to God.

In addition to frequent uplifting messages like these, Gokey tries to share encouragement through his music.

“I didn’t want to create music just for the church,” he previously told Billboard. “I wanted to encourage, motivate, and entertain people who would never walk into a church because music is a gift that should be shared.”

Last weekend, Gokey took his voice to DC, where he sang at multiple 4th of July events. He has several singing events lined up throughout the rest of the year, too, including his annual Christmas tour with Natalie Grant.
