For influencer Brittany Lutz, wife of TWILIGHT actor Kellen Lutz, true love isn’t measured by grand gestures — it’s revealed in the moments when life falls apart.

“Someone once said, ‘Marry someone you can suffer with.’ I used to think that was so sad,” Lutz explained in a recent Instagram post.

She realized that love isn’t all flowers and fun times.

“It’s who holds you when you’re drowning,” she said. “The one who builds you a boat.”

In the caption, she said she loves her husband more than words can say.

“He’s built me many a boats, gotten in and rowed me to safety. It’s you @kellanlutz forever and ever ❤️” she said.

Last year, Lutz explained that many young Christians idolize marriage.

“I am very pro-marriage. I am a huge advocate for marriage,” Lutz said in an Instagram video. I think it is beautiful, I think it is wonderful, but let me tell you that your life does not start when you get married.”

God does not wait to give people a passion or purpose until they are married.

“I do think that sometimes there are a lot of people in Christian circles, or Christian influencers, and it’s like, ‘Oh, I can’t wait for you to get married and for your life to start!’ and I just want to apologize if I’ve ever made anyone feel that way, and on behalf of anyone else, if they’ve ever made you feel that way,” she continued. “Because the truth is, your life starts the moment you have breath in your lungs.”

God created humans as independent beings, and He often gives them individual purposes.

She explained, “You are a child of God, born with a calling and a destiny and a purpose in this world. Your life does not start when you get married. Your life starts now.”

Kellan previously told Fox that his marriage to Brittany is strong because they make their faith important.

“And we pray a lot, honestly. Our prayer life is one of the strongest things for us,” he said.

In June, he said, “The best marriage advice is simple: never let the sun go down on an argument, and never let the kitchen counter stay dirty after making a snack.”

The actor previously told PEOPLE he instantly knew he’d marry Brittany after he met her.

“I’m like, ‘I think you’re my wife,’” he gushed. “We talked on the phone for seven hours because I was in Australia filming a movie and she was in Orange County.”

“And it was just beautiful, authentic. We just became best friends. So then [our privacy] was really about protecting the intimacy and fragility of the relationship,” he said.

The Lutzs’ story is a reminder that while marriage is a gift, it’s best when it’s built on a spiritual foundation and when there’s a mutual willingness to weather life’s storms side by side.
